MCG Emergency Medicine Residency Emergency Medicine Residency
Department of Emergency Medicine
Medical College of Georgia at Augusta

The EM residency is well respected on campus and is consistently one of the strongest residency programs in the institution. We are an ACGME accredited 3-year program and enjoy full departmental status at Augusta University, formerly Georgia Regents University (GRU). Our residency has grown significantly from its inception and has permanent approval for 14 residents per clinical year.

Name: Sarah Vick Shead, MD, PGY-1

Medical School: Medical College of Georgia

Hometown: Augusta, GA

Hobbies: Kayaking, Painting, Travelling/exploring new areas with my doggo and husband Austin

Why EM: EM reminded me of why I came to medicine in the first place - the people, the ability to intervene anywhere, how patients present like a sudoku puzzle (what symptom fits where and how it all comes together). Also, the personalities because EM people rock 🤘🏼

Hobbies: Working on the farm with my wife and daughter managing our small zoo that currently includes cows, ducks, geese, chickens, turkeys, guineas, dogs, cats, goats, sheep and wallabies.

Why EM: I love the constant challenge and need to think on your feet, incorporating knowledge from every other specialty and the blend of critical thinking and procedural skills. It's one of the few places where you can make such a huge difference in someone's life at such a vulnerable time and the general comradery from other clinicians within the specialty I believe is unmatched.

Hobbies: Traveling to new countries, experiencing live music, skiing the West, strenuous work-outs, meditation, binge-watching shows, grabbing a beer with friends

Why EM: It's a very stimulating field; high-energy and full of surprises. I love being able to care for any age group, background, and pathology (to an extent!). These skills apply to a wide variety of contexts, so the job and travel opportunities, along with discrete work hours, make for my ideal lifestyle.

Hobbies: I am a big sports fan. Whether it’s watching the Colorado Avalanche in the NHL or Baylor Bears in the Big 12, I am always looking for the next big game day. My wife and I also love film. So much so that we have been marching our way through the Library of Congress’ Complete National Film Registry.

Why EM: EM is often the front line of healthcare. The day that will live in infamy for my family is the day that my dad was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He had a great ED doctor that set the tone of hope and courage which he held onto during the duration of his treatments. I want to do the same for all the patients I encounter. I want to be there for their emergencies and instill the confidence that they are getting the best care.

Favorite Quote: “Be careful then, how you live- not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is." Ephesians 5:15-17

Hobbies: In short, anything that involves getting knocked around! Rugby is a sport that’s been near and dear to my heart ever since my freshman year of undergrad, but over the past two years I’ve become increasingly involved in armored combat. If the hits are hard, I’m your guy.

Why EM: The ability to be a jack of all trades in a pinch is something I love about all of emergency medicine, from EMS personnel to nurses to the physicians themselves. I also love the fact that EM also allows you to be there so directly for the community around you, serving everyone regardless of who they are or where they come from or where they’re at in life. Being there for those people in some of their scariest moments is a privilege and an amazing opportunity to give back to the community you live in.

Hobbies: I like keeping my wife happy, but in my free time, I enjoy playing soccer and chess. I follow the Mexican National Team and Chivas de Guadalajara. For chess, my favorite opening is the Caro-Kann.

Why EM: Emergency medicine is the best specialty💯. The fast-paced environment excites me, and I’m drawn to the unpredictability of cases. Helping patients during their most critical moments is incredibly rewarding. The camaraderie among emergency medical residents is inspiring. Being on the frontlines of medical emergencies, I strive to make a meaningful impact on individuals when they are at their most vulnerable. It’s a calling that brings purpose to my career and allows me to contribute significantly to the well-being of others.

Hobbies: Spending time with family! I have 3 wild boys, so they take up most of my free time. Otherwise, you might catch me attempting a mindless task such as basic carpentry or lawn care.

Why EM: Fast paced, dynamic, and people focused. It is a specialty that can extend beyond the walls of a hospital and encourages a spectrum of care. Whether it is working with other specialties to admit, offering an ear to a patient who needs to be listened to, or providing resources to bridge a gap in care for someone in need, this specialty has the unique opportunity to truly advocate for someone.

Hobbies: I love being outdoors, so anything that will keep me active I am usually interested in. I also have two dogs over 80lbs, so I really have no choice lol. I love listening to music and collecting vinyls (I am an 80s-90s RnB girl). My husband is the best human being I know, so anytime I get to spend with him is always my favorite. He's a huge blessing and a PHENOMENAL COOK, so he tries out different recipes on me, because...I love to eat! I'm generally pretty funny, but once I come out of my shell, I’m HILARIOUS, so I like to add being a comedian as a hobby lol. I am a self-care and wellness enthusiast, so I love finding new ways to incorporate peaceful practices into my daily routine (Iced coffee, a podcast, and a long walk is my go-to). I have a Jeep…if you know, you know 🕶️ 👋🏾 ✌🏾. I also love gardening!

Why EM: I chose EM as a specialty because of its variety, excitement, and how it affords me different avenues to work with underserved communities like the ones I grew up in. I also appreciate how the specialty allows me time to decompress at the end of a shift and really enjoy life. Plus, the EM community is amazing!

What books have you read recently: The Silent Patient By Alex Michaelides. I am still in complete shock!!
