Congratulations to Dr. Achim Klug and the research team on receiving a new NIH R01 award from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) to support the project,“Reversal of age related demyelination in the auditory brain stem.” This groundbreaking research will investigate mechanisms underlying age-related changes in the auditory brainstem and explore strategies to restore neural function, advancing our understanding of hearing loss associated with aging. The award provides nearly $2 million in funding to support this important work and further the mission of improving hearing health across the lifespan.

Congratulations to Drs. Daniel Tollin and Kristen Mueller and and their research team on receiving a new five-year NIH R01 award from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) in support of their project,“The impact of cochlear synaptopathy on brainstem mechanisms of monaural temporal processing and binaural hearing.” This research will advance our understanding of how hidden hearing loss affects neural processing in the auditory brainstem and contributes to challenges with speech perception and binaural hearing. The award provides approximately $3.1 million in total projected funding over five years to support this important work.

Congratulations to Dr. David A. DiGregorio and collaborators on receiving a new NIH R01 award from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) for the project,"Synaptic Basis of Temporal Learning in the Cerebellum." This five-year award will support groundbreaking research to uncover how synaptic mechanisms in the cerebellum enable the brain to learn and precisely time behaviors, advancing our understanding of neural circuits underlying learning and memory.

Exciting news! The Tollin lab has recieved a new NIH R01 grant, titled "Understanding the Link Between Hearing Loss and Alzheimer’s Disease."

This new multi-PI NIH R01 (R01 AG091162-01A1) grant is led by Henrique von Gersdorff, PhD, at Oregon Health & Science University and Daniel J. Tollin, PhD, at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus investigating how hearing loss and Alzheimer’s disease interact within the auditory brainstem.
Age-related hearing loss is an important risk factor for dementia, yet the neural mechanisms connecting hearing dysfunction and Alzheimer’s disease remain poorly understood. Our collaborative project will combine cellular and synaptic electrophysiology, non-invasive auditory evoked responses and behavioral tests of spatial hearing to determine how Alzheimer’s pathology alters the neural circuits responsible for binaural hearing and understanding sounds in complex environments like classrooms and workplaces.

A major goal is to determine whether changes in binaural auditory processing emerge before conventional hearing loss or cognitive symptoms, potentially providing a new physiological window into the earliest stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

This collaboration brings together complementary expertise in synaptic neurophysiology, auditory brainstem function and spatial hearing to address an increasingly important intersection between hearing and brain health.
