💫 Great work by one of our i-LEAD students, Erica Amyx! She and her colleague were awarded first place for their poster presentation focusing on reducing workplace violence in a healthcare setting at the AdventHealth Rocky Mountain Region Science and Innovation Conference last week. Erica plans to meet with AdventHealth Porter's ER department in a few weeks to present their data and potentially begin a pilot study. We can't wait to see the impact of her work!

Finding a health care provider can be a challenge. Should you choose a medical doctor or a nurse practitioner? Who is the best provider for your needs? Should you and your child see the same provider?

Dr. Alexis Barrere, a pediatric nurse practitioner at Sheridan Health Services, is answering those questions. She explains why choosing a nurse practitioner can be beneficial and advises patients to find the best provider to meet their health needs and age group.

💫 Meet our October Preceptor of the Month, Sarah Schwenk, PMHNP!

Sarah has precepted our students since 2019 and works on campus in the Department of Psychiatry, precepting students in the Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic. She also precepts students in the Fairbanks Native Association. She says teaching is one of the most rewarding parts of her job, adding, “Watching students grow in their clinical acumen, gain confidence in the management of psychiatric patients, and transition into practice as thoughtful, well-trained colleagues is such a joy!”

A teacher once told Courtney Hoffbauer's parents, "If you could just get her through high school you should consider it a win!" Today, Courtney, DNP '20, is Chief Nursing Officer and VP of Patient Care Services at UPMC in Pittsburgh. She's also the clinical voice behind the opening of the new 17-story Kamin Tower.

Along the way, she failed a clinical, was told she couldn't retake it, and found another way. When someone tells her no, she has a ready answer: "You mean yes. How do we get there... let's figure it out."

💫 We’re thrilled to announce that Melissa McMaster, one of our DNP students, has been selected for the Jonas Scholars Program by Jonas Philanthropies. She is one of 80 nursing leaders from across the country who will learn from national nursing experts, build a network of forward-thinking peers, and develop innovative strategies to become successful nursing faculty members. Melissa’s DNP focus is veterans’ health, and we’re excited to see the impact she will make in advancing care for veterans, educating the next generation of nurses, and strengthening the future of the nursing workforce. Congratulations, Melissa!

For Midwifery Week, we’re celebrating some of our midwives who are also athletes! 💪 Back in May, one of our midwives Josi Berry, along with Shannon Pirrie, and Heather O'Meara from University Nurse-Midwives: University of Colorado Hospital ran the Colfax Marathon Relay with the team name O***y Achievers. All three are also alumni of the nurse-midwifery program at the University of Colorado Anschutz College of Nursing. Great job! 🏃
