With great sadness I note the passing of Dr. Dave Adams. Many of you knew Dave, for he was an iconic Oregon State University Extension Agent working in nurseries and Greenhouses here in the Willamette Valley. For those who did not, he matched his extensive knowledge and experience about plants with one of the most generous spirits I have known.

When Dave wasn’t helping growers, Master Gardeners, and the public with plants, he used his time off to volunteer to work with growers all over the world though organizations such as VOCA, Volunteers in Overseas Assistance. Some of those assignments were in some pretty dicey regions. We used to joke that there always seemed to be a revolution wherever he was assigned. Our way of acknowledging his courage and resolution to help people despite the risks. He was truly devoted to his family, friends, and church.

As a colleague I benefited from his mentorship and support, particularly when the going got tough. Dave had a wicked sense of humor and uplifted many conversations with much needed laughter. He was one of the most accessible Extension Agents I’ve ever known. He was renowned for his work with the Ornamental Northwest Seminars. I’m sure most of the nursery industry here and many afar were changed significantly for the better through his work. It was a privilege to work with him.

Sending my condolences to Dave’s family. Please keep them in your thoughts.
