This idiom comes from sailing. New sailors had to be taught how to use the many ropes on a ship. Today, “learn the ropes” means learning something new. 🪢

From Seoul to Austin, Jeewon Kim came to UT Austin with her husband, who began a Ph.D. program here. Through the English Language Center, she found more than English practice; she found new ways to connect, explore campus, and speak with less fear.

“The program itself was worth it not only for learning English, but also for learning about U.S. culture,” Jeewon said.

After completing her courses, she hopes to communicate more easily with researchers working in her field. 🤘🌎
