Introducing Clarke— our next feature in the series!

Clarke is a 3rd year CLD student from Fort Worth, TX. On campus, Clarke is involved in Texas Alpha Phi Omega, Communication Council, and her sorority (not to be named as she plans to help with recruitment!).

Clarke always knew she was passionate about teamwork and leadership, but “didn’t know how to translate it into a college degree.” One day, her mother found the description of the CLD degree online, and Clarke “immediately knew” that was the degree she wanted to pursue.

Her favorite class was Dr. Schooler’s Facilitative Leadership; she even described the final project as “so much fun!”, so you know it’s a good course!

Keep up with Clarke on instagram !

Our feature this week is Houston-native and 2019-grad Giovanni Johnson!

Giovanni’s favorite leader and communicator is Beyonce! He notes that this may be an atypical choice, but we certainly agree that Beyonce’s influence and leadership is remarkable. Giovanni admires Beyonce and her way of communicating to the Black community: always conveying “how to be proud and authentically ourselves.”

Today, Giovanni is an admissions counselor for UT! He works with prospective students and shares his insights as a “Black first gen college student.” What an awesome opportunity to help future students find their way!

In terms of his favorite courses he took as a CLD major, Giovanni recommends Interviewing Skills and Professional Communications. Both classes are sure to help improve confidence in communicating—a valuable skill as a leader.

We wish Giovanni all the success and more! Keep up with him on his socials below!

We are excited to bring back this summer! Our first feature of the summer is Emily Anaya!

Emily is an upcoming junior from Kingwood, TX. Her favorite CLD class thus far has been Dr. Drumwright’s Seminar (CLD 321). She says the class has “taught [her] more about [herself] than any other class [she’s] ever taken.”

Emily’s favorite leader is poet Amanda Gordon. She says that Gordon shows that “world-changing communication can be beautiful and artistic.” It certainly is remarkable when communicators incorporate creativity to create tangible change.

Emily loves the CLD major because it allows to her focus on both her love of communication and social issues. She recommends the major to those who are interested in “how society and communication function to shape each other”. What a perfect depiction of the major!

She advises other CLD majors and Moody students to “seize every opportunity you think you can grow from”. Finding outlets for personal growth is certainly great advice for leaders in the making.

Today's leadership spotlight is Laverne Cox, an actress and LGBTQ+ advocate.

Laverne Cox was born in Mobile, Alabama. As a child, she was bullied intensely by her peers for not acting “the way someone assigned male at birth was supposed to act."

She skyrocketed into the public eye in 2013 with her role in the hit series, Orange is the New Black. Since then, Cox has been a trailblazer of ‘firsts’ for the transgender community. Be it a Time magazine cover, Emmy nomination, or even a wax figure at Madame Tussaud’s, she is paving the way for representation.

Her activism expands beyond magazine covers. Cox continually uses her platform to advocate and uplift the transgender community. Laverne Cox is an excellent example of a resilient leader; through her hardships, she has overcome.

"There’s not just one trans story. There’s not just one trans experience." -Laverne Cox 🏳️‍🌈

As Pride Month comes to a close, we would like to feature prominent LGBTQ+ leaders as well as UT LGBTQ+ organizations.

During Pride Month, we recognize the resilience of individuals who break stigmas and present their authentic selves.

Pride Month occurs in June, to honor the Stonewall riots of June, 1969. Looking back on this event, we are able to see how far we’ve come, but also reflect on how far we have to go.

If you have leaders or UT organizations you would like to see featured before the month is up, please DM us or comment down below!
