In the fall of 2005 at The University of Texas at Austin, Joe Morales and Justin Lacap gave birth to the idea of creating a “true” multi-cultural fraternity on campus. This was an idea that Founding Father Joe Morales toyed with since high school, but once arriving at UT and observing the Greek community, he quickly realized that not a single Greek organization offered a “true” multicultural exper
ience. True diversity and exposure to different cultures had always been a really important issue for Founding Father Morales, so the ideas of what a true multicultural fraternity was, bounced back and forth between Founding Fathers Morales and Lacap. For the next 3 semesters the idea lay dormant in the minds of these two founders, but in the spring of 2007 Founders Morales and Lacap started sharing these ideas with friends that they thought would be interested in this endeavor. Santiago Casiano IV and his lifelong friend Esteban Alonso Salinas Jr., who were rooming across the hall from Morales and with them Alex Bartels, liked the idea and agreed to join. During the summer Nathan Levy decided to join, and finally Tan Nguyen heard about the concept while chatting with Morales and Lacap, also agreed to join to support the cause. The ideals were established and all nine founders committed to the realization of this organization. On September 24, 2007 the University of Texas recognized Alpha Kappa Omega, the name chosen at the time, as a fraternity. After further research Alpha Kappa Omega was found to be used by three other organizations, so SIGMA KAPPA PHI was chosen
