Hey everyone. First off I’d like to apologize for my disappearance this past semester. I set up this club up without thinking about the long-term, and other responsibilities wormed their way into my life. Because of this I decided to put this club on the back burner and focus on other priorities. I have since re-evaluated where parkour belongs in my life, and I’m sure some of you have seen me training on campus more frequently.
Basically, I’d like to leave something behind during my last year at St. Edward’s, and I’d like to make it this club. Parkour has inspired and motivated my life in such a large way the past 3 years that imagining a life without it is impossible. Many people I’ve talked to over the years always express a passing interest in the movement and the desire to give it a try, but many don’t. I always find it funny when I listen to people explain why they aren’t good for parkour because, for the most part, I dealt with all issues they bring up. I was a clumsy and weak band nerd with no interest in sports and the only desire I had was to watch anime and play music. A single Youtube video changed my mind. The video didn’t show extreme flips and jumps like you see on Youtube now. It showed pure and efficient movement from a first-person perspective. I remember watching parkour videos before this one, but none of them touched me so profoundly. The prevailing thought I had was “This is something I could actually do”. I want to believe that everyone is capable of thinking this, especially about parkour. I was once a part of a workshop in Dallas where, to my left, was a 14 year old boy, and to my right, was a 54 year old woman. Each were following along with what we were doing at their own pace, and each were enjoying the freedom of movement.
So the point to all this mindless rambling? Everyone can move, parkour is movement, everyone can do parkour. If you have any sort of desire, curiosity, inkling of motivation, or challenge to yourself to try parkour, then I think you should. That said, I’m going to be more proactive with this club and I encourage anyone else that is interested in helping out contact me in some way. Parkour is about a community coming together and teaching each other, so let’s make a great community.
