The University Writing Center, a unit of the Department of Rhetoric and Writing, helps UT students become more proficient, more versatile, and more confident in their writing abilities. We do so by providing one-on-one writing consultations to students, supporting the faculty teaching writing, giving presentations to classes, developing handouts, and employing undergraduate and graduate student consultants. To make an appointment, call, stop by the front desk, or visit our website.

I met Scott Blackwood in September of 2000. He interviewed me for an administrative position at the University Writing Center. He took me to coffee that day, gave me a tour of the one room writing center in the Flawn Academic Center (UGL), and then hired me. At the time, I was an unemployed, homeless musician who had just returned to Austin after living in Denmark for a year and a half. Much to my surprise, he thought I was a good fit for the UWC. It was all very casual and organic. That’s how Scott was. He was so natural in the world. Scott worked as the Program Coordinator at the University Writing Center at the University of Texas at Austin from 1999 to 2008. I was his coworker for eight of those years. During that time, he was a friend, mentor, and an advocate to me and hundreds of consultants at the UWC. For those of you who don’t know the basics of writing center theory, this is it: “Collaboration allows consultants to involve students in a dialogue which helps to get in touch with their knowledge and find their unique voices. Collaborative environment rejects any kinds of hierarchies in the writing centers, thus allowing to negotiate and set common goals.” Scott embodied this ideal. He was inclusive and supportive. In an academic setting that is often competitive and brutal, he held a non-hierarchical, collaborative, safe space for us to find our voice in the world. He gave generously with no expectations. I am forever changed by his friendship.- Michele Solberg, October 6, 2023

✨UWC INTERN SPOTLIGHT✨

Marianna Rooks is a current 2nd year Informatics major with a concentration in social justice Informatics! By becoming a writing consultant, she is hoping to improve the strength of her own writing and communication skills through collaboration with the diverse voices of clients and peers, but what she is most looking forward to is getting involved in the community at the UWC! Best writing advice: “The best writing advice I’ve ever received is simply to plan! It wasn’t until junior year of high school that my AP LANG teacher, who also doubled as my mother, finally got me to plan out my writing. What I have come to realize since then is that organizing my ideas often divulges a starting point. And even if not, having a rough outline often makes the writing more fluid overall. I may not have always taken my parents’ advice, but I’m thankful I listened to this one. I don’t know where my writing would be without it (thanks, Mom)!”

✨UWC INTERN SPOTLIGHT✨
Waverli Almand is a current 3rd year Government and Rhetoric & Writing major with a minor in Business. She spent the fall semester of 2022 studying social policy in Edinburgh, Scotland with the Texas Global exchange program, which greatly influenced her writing style and perspective! Her writing process has been developed over a number of years through a love of creative writing and a background in the natural sciences. The most memorable advice that she has received came from a children's author that mentored her in elementary school: "The most powerful sentence that you can use in the writing process is 'What If?'". Though her current career path may not include the style of creative writing that initially inspired her, she finds that her best ideas always come from asking herself "What If?". Waverli hopes to influence at least one person on their writing journey the same way that her mentors and professors have influenced her.

For today’s post, we are highlighting one of the UWC’s interns, Trinity Ngo! She is a first-year English major in LAH that hails from Houston, Texas! Fun Fact: Her favorite book is Less by Andrew Sean Greer, and she hopes to add Rhetoric and Writing as a second major in the near future.
After finishing her first semester at UT, she has learned a lot about the writing process. Her favorite advice has been to “jump into drafting. You can make lists of ideas, type pages without reading them on the first go, or make messy outlines, but the most important part is getting something on the page. It makes revising and expanding easier. Most of all, you feel proud of yourself for getting something on paper. It is that first step to the boost of serotonin that comes from looking at a stapled and finished draft.”
Trinity has joined the UWC with “hopes to help people feel more confident in their writing. After hearing from friends and peer-revising countless essays, writing seems like a skill that causes many to falter in their steps. However, I think becoming a positive, encouraging mentor to those seeking safe collaboration in the UWC is something I really hope to achieve in my time at UT.”
Keep an eye out for Trinity when you stop by the UWC and stay tuned for more UWC intern introductions as we showcase our new team!

✨UWC INTERN SPOTLIGHT✨

Bradyn is a sophomore Plan II and English major pursuing a business minor. Although slightly controversial, she thinks that the phrase "Write what you know" is the worst advice she's ever received. She believes the phrase excludes the process of research and learning that goes into being able to "write what you know." It really should say: "Write what you've learned."

One of the most challenging projects she tackled was for an English course at UT. The teacher assigned her with writing an article reviewing a story read in class. With the teacher's approval, Bradyn decided to turn the article from a book review into a policy review of Title 42 through a lens generated by two stories. Because she'd grown accustomed to writing analytical essays and flowery poetry, the most difficult aspect of the project arose from maintaining a colloquial style throughout the article. But after several revisions, she figured it out just fine. The point? Don't be afraid to experiment with unfamiliar voices—even if that voice happens to be your own.

As an intern, she looks forward to hearing what each voice that walks into the Writing Center has to say. She's excited to glean new ideas from majors needing assistance with lab reports, essays, articles, and other various writing assignments.

✨UWC INTERN SPOTLIGHT✨

Hello! My name is Lyndsey Segura, and I am a second-year Rhetoric & Writing major with a minor in Mexican-American/Latino studies. My most challenging writing assignment was a Literature Review on the critical scholarly reception of Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing during my first semester at UT. Through this assignment, I learned how to effectively navigate the UT library databases and how to conduct research. I also discovered how to quickly discern the most relevant parts of academic writing and the importance of peer revision. As a Rhetoric & Writing student, I know the writing process is a complicated journey. I am excited to become a UWC consultant because I have had several valuable UWC consultations on various writing assignments. My biggest hope is to emulate the inviting atmosphere I have experienced with each UWC consultant. I look forward to helping students become more confident writers that enjoy the rewarding challenge of writing.
