“In the name of Allah, The most merciful, The Most Kind”
We, the executive board of Texas Mu Delta Alpha, are writing to express our outrage and deepened sadness over the senseless murder of George Floyd at the hands of the Minneapolis police. His death serves as a reminder of the systemic racism and white supremacy that continues to exist in America. As a sisterhood inspired by Islamic faith, Texas Mu Delta Alpha is committed to uplifting the voices of those who tirelessly fight against oppressors in the name of freedom, safety, and equality. We at Texas Mu Delta Alpha support all those who are currently protesting for Black liberation on all fronts. These protests are in response to the recent murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony Mcdade, Sean Reed, and countless other Black people who have been murdered by the state at the hands of a broken justice system.
Ignoring our privilege to the point of inaction in situations that do not directly impact us makes us complicit to the actions of the oppressors. It is our duty as individuals to use our privilege to drive change in our communities. We acknowledge that our current demographic in Texas Mu Delta Alpha is comprised majorly by South Asian women, but we are, and will continue, to do our best to fulfill our intentions of promoting a diverse sisterhood in a society where Black representation among Muslim sisters is limited. Our founder, Samira Maddox, is a revolutionary Black woman that envisioned a safe and diverse sisterhood for all our chapters, and we can only expand her efforts in ensuring that this sisterhood remains founded on her same ideals of inclusivity and respect. In an effort to do so, we will stand up against unjust rhetoric and call out those around us for any racist and discriminatory sentiment, and we encourage our sisters to do the same in their lives and reflect accordingly. In addition, we will constantly advocate for Black rights by donating to organizations and start-ups that will create a meaningful impact for those that are affected, protesting in contestation of unjust legislation, and continuing to educate our community and family members and hold their actions accountable. Through individual change, we hold the potential for Black people (and especially Black Muslims on-campus) to speak their truths in a safe and supportive environment. In social media, socials, and in our professional events, we will continue to promote the voices of those that come from underrepresented spaces by creating a safe space for our Black brothers and sisters to freely talk about their experiences and know that the people in this organization are here to provide endless support.
“O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah ; indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.” [Quran 5:8]
As we come together to navigate what the revolutionary events of the past week entails for our future, we must acknowledge that we do not have the option to return to a “normal”, oblivious state of society without ensuring that every single one of our Black brothers and sisters are assured equity and justice. This issue transcends nations, religions, and politics, and begins with the dialogue we create in our own homes. We have sincere hope that, together, all of our efforts will one day help change our world.
We are bound by our faith of Islam and our morality to stand in solidarity with Black people and the Black Lives Matter movement as we come together and fight against this painful magnitude of oppression, injustice, and violence. We wish for strength and peace in every single grieving heart as we manifest the changes we want to see and as we focus on our goals of inclusivity. We thank you for allowing us to use our platform for the good of mankind.
With love and solidarity with the Black Muslims Alliance and Black Lives Matter movement,
Texas Mu Delta Alpha
