What if a standard camera could help doctors make better decisions in the operating room? 🧠

UT Austin researchers have developed a new way to monitor blood flow using standard camera hardware, opening the door to more precise imaging during surgery and other medical procedures. The technology could have applications in neurosurgery, stroke care, cardiac surgery, brain injury research, and more.

Launching Leaders: For over 20 years, the College of Natural Sciences, UT Austin Freshman Research Initiative (FRI) has helped set the standard for STEM education by giving first-year students hands-on research experience from day one. 🔬

More than 16,000 UT students have participated in the program, and research about FRI has found that the program boosts students’ chances of staying in a STEM major and graduating within four years: https://utex.as/4tZB90d

Horns all the way up for our very own, Dean Roger Bonnecaze 🤘
Dean Bonnecaze has earned the Eugene C. Bingham Medal, the top international award in rheology.

For more than two decades, he has led influential research on how materials flow under pressure — work that’s earned him worldwide respect and helped advance the field in meaningful ways.

He’ll be honored this October in Boston at the Society of Rheology annual meeting, where he’ll also deliver the prestigious Bingham Lecture.

Help us congratulate this momentous recognition for the Cockrell School of Engineering, the McKetta Department of Chemical Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin, and, last but not least, our very own Dean Roger Bonnecaze!

Class of 2026: Dylan Haefner came to UT Austin to pursue photography and found a creative community that changed his life. 🧡📸

The studio art major studied street photography in Italy, showcased his work at the Review Santa Fe Photo Symposium and spent countless hours collaborating with classmates in the darkroom and photo lab. Along the way, he discovered that some of the most meaningful parts of being an artist come from the people around you.

Now, as Haefner prepares for a career as a working artist, he says the friendships, mentorship and opportunities he found at UT will stay with him long after graduation. Read more about his journey here -https://utex.as/4fEFEK4

Tower Tuesday: What we see today started before there was scaffolding around the Tower.

In 2023, a group of highly trained conservators, many educated at UT, circled the Tower for weeks and evaluated the level of rust on the steel spandrels, scraped paint samples and investigated what kind of cleaning techniques would work best on the stonework.

We were there to capture those moments 📸:

Class of 2026: Sydney Stewart and Nicholas Montoya turned their sweet tooth into success! 🍞✨

What started as baking together during college quickly grew into something much bigger for these recent UT graduates. Today, they’re the owners of Stoya Bread & Co., a baked goods business serving bread, bagels, cookies and more from their bread shed near campus.

What if cancer treatment didn’t mean harsh side effects? 🩺

A collaboration between researchers in Texas and Portugal has led to a breakthrough using LED light and nanotechnology to destroy cancer cells while protecting healthy ones.

This could lead to fewer side effects, lower costs and even at-home treatments in the future:
