On Aug. 25, the UT Austin School of Nursing certified 24 attendees in Basic Life Support (BLS) during the Quality in Long Term Care Conference (QLTCC), held at the Renaissance Hotel in Austin.

Led by Loree LaChance and Juan Rocha on behalf of UTSON’s American Heart Association (AHA) Training Center, the session offered hands-on instruction and skills review in adult and infant CPR.

The initiative reflects UTSON’s ongoing commitment to advancing healthcare education and supporting excellence in long-term care, especially for professionals whose employers may not offer certification opportunities. By providing BLS certification in this setting, UTSON expanded access to essential training for long-term care providers while investing in community health and workforce readiness.

A dedicated team of BLS instructors contributed their time, expertise, and collaborative spirit to ensure a high-quality learning experience:

· Juan Rocha, UTSON Training Center Coordinator
· Loree LaChance, UT alum
· Michael McMullen, independent instructor
· Jeni Irvine, UT Athletics instructor

Their contributions highlight the strength of UTSON’s instructional network and its commitment to community engagement, professional development, and improved care outcomes.

HNSA Advisors Drs. Janice F. Hernandez and Anna Mendoza, with the UT Hispanic Nursing Student Association (HNSA), led high‑impact cardiovascular health outreach at this year’s “Vestido Rojo” event in Austin on Aug. 29, 2026. Sherlyn Sosa, HNSA’s volunteer coordinator who is graduating with her BSN this December along with HNSA volunteers conducted blood pressure screenings, offered individualized education, and taught compression‑only CPR, ensuring more than 600 Latina women left with practical, lifesaving knowledge.

Vestido Rojo is part of the American Heart Association’s Go Red Por Tu Corazón campaign is a community‑based initiative that provides heart‑health education, screenings, and resources specifically designed for Latina women, who face disproportionate risks for hypertension and cardiovascular disease. The event serves as a trusted space for culturally relevant learning, empowerment, and connection.

HNSA’s involvement reflects the organization’s ongoing dedication to advancing health literacy, supporting preventive care, and strengthening community partnerships across Central Texas.

Congratulation to Dr. Jung Kwak for receiving a $3 million R01 award from the National Institutes of Aging for her project, "Matching Care to Need in Dementia Care Transitions: Identifying Patient-Caregiver Profiles and Co-Developing Provider and System Implementation Tools."

Dr. Kwak's project will develop a profile-based framework for matching transitional care services to distinct caregiving groups that focus on persons living with dementia. Her study will move beyond the traditional, one-size-fits-all approaches to enable tailored, evidence-based care by creating workflow templates for embedding transitional care into existing processes, including stakeholder training and usability testing.
