But here's the scoop for fellow beginners: it's OKAY not to have it all figured out from day one.

We are often asked .. Is now a good time to become a computer programmer?

TLDR answer, yes, it is the single very best time to start that journey. In addition, this is the best time to ask that question. Why? Because of the economy, the pandemic fallout, the growth of AI and systemic shortage of trained manpower. Most of all it is because software is now not a pursuit of tech companies alone, but every sector of the economy needs it to grow and survive.

Moreover, the United States has such a large need for programming savvy professionals and not many choose to enter this field. As such the country is importing foreign talent by the boat loads. Look around you. According to a ManpowerGroup survey, talent shortages in the U.S. have more than tripled in the last ten years, with 69% of employers struggling to fill positions, up from just 14% in 2010.

The industries that are most affected are the knowledge-intensive industries such as financial services, technology, healthcare, media, telecommunications and manufacturing.

Don't let the recent layoffs scare you. They are a direct result of the momentum and FOMO driven hiring over the last 3 years by many tech companies.

Thirdly, the wealth of educational resources available today is unparalleled. Open-source platforms, A class tools, boot camps, and even YouTube tutorials provide quality programming instruction for learners at every level. This democratized learning environment, coupled with the chance to contribute to open-source projects. The stigma of being a beginner has been lost. According to a recent JavaScript survey, more than 50% of the 16K+ respondents reported to have less than 5 years of programming experience.

Finally, the newest AI tools offered by companies like OpenAI (Playground) and Microsoft (Github Copilot Chat) are creating a massive rapid learning opportunity. Copilot is literally like an expert sitting with you, for as long as you are on your computer, helping you. AI has patience and good enunciation of concepts. You can use it accelerate your learning by 2-5x. I will soon post a video about me learning COBOL in under an hour. These tools are insanely useful and delightful. However, to get started some human guided training can be a big boost of your skills.

These tools make programmers with light training and time to work on their skills, into super-programmers very quickly. Those without training will be left far behind, pushed downward in the ladder of employment options.

In conclusion, today is the day to jump in and start that journey on a digital bullet train, that is fun and exciting.
