UMBC Computer Science and Electrical Engineering Department UMBC's CSEE dept. has 71 faculty and more than 2500 students in computer science, computer engineeri and Ph.D. We have awarded 340 Ph.D.

The CSEE department is research-oriented and multi-disciplinary with programs in Computer Science (CS), Computer Engineering (CE), Electrical Engineering (EE), Data Science, and Cybersecurity. Our faculty (37 tenure-track, 16 teaching, and 18 research) enjoy collaboration, working across our specializations as well as with colleagues from other STEM, humanities and the arts departments, and extern

al partners. We have more than 2,000 undergraduate CS and CE majors and more than 560 M.S. students in our CS, CE, EE, Data Science, and Cybersecurity graduate programs. degrees since our establishment in 1986. Our research is supported by a growing and diverse portfolio from government and industrial sponsors with over $6M in yearly research expenditures. We work to help new colleagues be successful by providing competitive startup packages, reduced teaching loads, and active mentoring.

UMBC's Center for Precision Aquaculture is an interdisciplinary effort to revolutionize land-based fish production through real-time monitoring and smart technology. CSEE professor Rebecca Williams is a co-investigator on the grant and worked with CSEE professor Don Engel to advise Beamlak Bekele in developing computer vision tools to extract information about fish in underwater environments for her Computer Science MS thesis. https://ai.umbc.edu/news/post/160234/

UMBC CSEE Professor Naghmeh Karimi and her students in SECRETS Lab, along with their collaborators, won the Best Hardware Demo award at the 2026 IEEE International Symposium on Hardware-Oriented Security and Trust. They demonstrated their research using PUFs ("physical unclonable functions") that use microscopic manufacturing variations in a semiconductor to generate a unique, unforgeable digital fingerprint for a specific device. https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/csee/posts/159893
