Fourteen CCBC students and four program leaders spent a week in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park last month exploring the natural environment and culture of Southern Appalachia. The group hiked, climbed, and meditated their way through park, the most biodiverse national park in the US. The week included folk music around the campfire fire; a spooky Appalachian storyteller; a visit to the beautiful Maryville College; bird banding; silent reflection and raucous laughter; red-cheeked salamanders; late nights and early mornings; new friends; 18 (!) black bear sightings and one coyote. It was an unforgettable week for all.
