Congratulations UMBC Department of Music Symphony Orchestra on another great concert! Under the baton of Professor Mann, we heard works by Johannes Brahms, Felix Mendelssohn, Richard Strauss, William Walton, and UMBC student Jean Nguyen, with student soloists Jocelyn Faison, Veronica Anzola Rojas, and Albert Russell. Congratulations to all of the UMBC Department of Music Chamber Players performers, and especially to studio members Matthew Buehler and Natalie Noyes who performed four works by Kristen Denny-Chambers Clarinet Playground, Melika Fitzhugh, Fran Griffin, and an arrangement by Natalie Noyes.

Studio alum Pam Voulalas also performed, playing a new work by UMBC student composer Reanne Salazar.

Congratulations UMBC Department of Music Wind Ensemble, UMBC Camerata, conductors Brian Kaufman and Lulu Mwangi, vocal soloist Janice Jackson, and our clarinet section on a terrific concert!

"Profit and Peril" explored through music the human cost of progress across American history and lived experience.

From the American Revolution to the rise of artificial intelligence, the program traced how systems of power (political, industrial, and technological) shape and challenge human lives. The performed works humanize industrial labor, the Great Migration, and the lasting impact of racial and economic injustice.

Across wind ensemble, choral, and vocal works—including music from Hamilton—the program centered the individuals living within these systems, ultimately affirming dignity, resilience, and human connection as the true measure of progress.

Congratulations UMBC Department of Music Symphony Orchestra and String Chamber Orchestra on a fantastic performance this weekend! The concert celebrated the artistic excellence of the student performers as well as several pivotal faculty in the Department of Music's history.

UMBC Violin Professor Airi Yoshioka shared her artistry in Alexander Glazunov's Violin Concerto, showing brilliant style and extraordinary virtuosity.

The orchestra performed What Remains by UMBC Composition Professor Linda Dusman, a beautiful work of exploratory sounds. And we look forward to celebrating Dr. Dusman's legacy at her retirement concert on Thursday December 11, 7:30pm in Linehan Concert Hall.

Lastly, the program honored the late Professor of Music and orchestra conductor E. Michael Richards, who passed away in 2023. The orchestra premiered Chesapeake, written by UMBC alum and current orchestra trumpeter Rich Sigwald.

Congratulations to studio members Oren Franklin and Gage Gann on their performances with New Music Ensemble! Additionally, Oren wrote a piece for this concert, Lazy Days, which was premiered by Gage and Reanne Salazar (violin). Congratulations Oren!

The group played music by Anton Webern, Philip Glass, Oren Franklin, Jean Nguyen, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Bill Ryan, and Claude Vivier.

It was a 🔥🔥🔥 concert with Wind Ensemble and a completely packed house this week. Congratulations to the band, UMBC Percussion Ensemble, and UMBC String Chamber Orchestra!

We were joined by an incredible guest artist, tabla musician Neelamjit Dillon, who guided in understanding the rich music traditions and rhythms of India.

To close the night, showcased their skills and taught a tune to the whole group.

Thank you and congratulations all! UMBC Department of Music is an Arts+ District destination for Maryland and beyond.
