UVA's Ziqiao Wang, PhD, and Johns Hopkins collaborators have developed PGS-TRI, a framework that uses genetic data from autistic children and their parents to separate direct genetic effects from parent-driven environmental ones.
Studying more than 18,000 family trios, they found genetic risk scores for autism are generally accurate, though less so for African and East Asian ancestry families, highlighting the need to include people of diverse backgrounds in genetic research. They also identified CADM2 as a promising gene target for future prevention work.
"This tool gives us opportunities to study ... how nature and nurture work together to influence a child's health," says Wang.
