Johns Hopkins International Injury Research Unit Injuries cause more than five million deaths every year. Research. Collaboration. We establish relationships both within Johns Hopkins University and externally.

The Johns Hopkins International Injury Research Unit is identifying solutions, influencing public policy and advancing the field of injury prevention throughout the world. Injuries cause more than five million deaths every year, resulting in high economic and social costs for communities around the globe. These costs are greater in low and middle-income countries, where many public health systems

have yet to prioritize injuries as a major health concern, despite the cost-effective methods available to prevent them. Through research, collaboration and training, the Johns Hopkins International Injury Research Unit strives to identify effective solutions to the growing burden of injuries in low and middle-income populations, influence public policy and practice, and advance the field of injury prevention throughout the world. Our experts conduct intervention trials, economic analyses and surveillance studies in order to determine the impact of injuries in developing countries, and identify potential solutions. Our work ranges from road safety in Mexico to drowning prevention in Bangladesh.

The first two days of the 2026 World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion have been great!

Our team led two pre-conference workshops focused on drowning prevention and road safety, and JH-IIRU Director Abdul Bachani also participated in the opening ceremony as a speaker.

Day two brought more opportunities to learn from colleagues from around the world. We’re grateful to everyone who has contributed to the conversations so far, including Kelly Larson from Bloomberg Philanthropies, Britta Lang from the Global Road Safety Partnership, Prof. Emmanuel Nakua from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Colleen J. Saunders from the University of Cape Town, and many others.

We’re looking forward to what the rest of the conference has in store!

Another great day at !

A big thank you to Caroline Lukaszyk and Nhan Tran from the World Health Organization for leading sessions on applying systems thinking, strengthening prevention strategies, and addressing root causes through water safety plans, while exploring the complexities of implementation science.

We also revisited key leadership and change management principles, essential skills they'll take back home.

🏖️ The 2026 Global Drowning Prevention Leadership Institute has officially kicked off!

On our first in-person day, we were thrilled to welcome Tessa Clemens from the CDC Foundation and Vandana Shah from the Global Health Advocacy Incubator to join our 27 participants for a full day of learning.

Thank you, Tessa, for exploring how data can help prioritize drowning prevention strategies and identify critical information gaps, and Vandana for guiding participants through policy and legislative pathways for drowning prevention.
