Imaging Research Center, UMBC Imaging Research Center at University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Real-world challenges don’t always live in single disciplines.

Despite the explosion of new communication systems and the torrents of information flowing through them, valuable knowledge often goes unnoticed. It is no longer viable to stick with the status quo when it comes to sharing and understanding this knowledge, especially if it has the potential to make positive contributions to our human experience. Like a tree that falls in the forest when no one is

around, what is the value of a message nobody hears? Increasing the impact of knowledge requires innovation in both what we say and how we say it. With a quarter century of experience, the IRC is a leader in taking an entrepreneurial approach to leveraging new technologies and emerging transmedia platforms to reimagine content in forms that will do good. We use these new tools to experiment with the language of art, design, and storytelling, to break through the noise and create meaningful connections between knowledge and people. Often, they require building teams of researchers and students who come from diverse domains. The conference table is where some of the most creative ideas come to life, and as a leading up-and-coming university, UMBC is a superb environment for collaboration. We are building a trans-disciplinary community on campus and beyond that takes risks together to discover new forms that can inspire and engage audiences in meaningful ways. We are student and faculty researchers, artists, scholars, and industry leaders. Our progressive approach to education complements students’ classroom experiences with a project-based, hands-on approach to solving real problems. Students are mentored by and work alongside faculty, staff, alumni, and UMBC’s external partners, learning how to bring new strategies, practices, and ideas to fruition. They learn the latest technologies and the art of collaboration through valuable experiences that help prepare them to be industry leaders by the time they graduate. Equally important is our commitment to providing faculty with a supportive environment and opportunities to transform their research and teaching.

Hey everyone who enjoyed listening to our first season of our podcast, Kaleid, we have dropped 4 new episodes in a series we call Making Identities. We worked with 4 young producers—"digital natives"—to help them tell their stories about what it is like establishing who you are when you're smack in the middle of a media landscape few know how to manage. This will be relevant to others in their twenties, but also parents, teachers, and anyone concerned with what new media mean for young folks. This season starts with episode #4. https://www.irc.umbc.edu/kaleid

Kaleid Ep 1: Media History, Media Now

We speak with US Civil War Historian Anne Rubin about the ways different forms of media—from the penny press to social apps—can divide people and fragment ideas. We discuss the challenge of engaging the public in the real complexity of issues given that media prefer tiny sound bites. The conversation turns to the national discord around removing monuments, looking at monuments themselves as a kind of media.

What it takes to make realistic images of the world has changed over the centuries. Once, it was understanding light, form and perspective. Now, it's being able to generate random numbers.

In their article in the Journal of Computer Graphic Techniques Marc Olano and Mark Jarzynski evaluate methods of generating random to achieve realism.

Check out our project write up to learn more about the pursuit of depicting reality throughout history .

How much do media and data systems help us meet the challenges that matter most in society and in our lives? How much do they distract us or even contribute to our woes?

Dive in with us into the questions that keep us up at night with our new podcast Kaleid!

Kaleid provides a window into the thinking of those who research how and why these systems succeed or fail, and those who experiment with new digital media technologies, forms and content that might better serve public interests.
