For the upcoming holiday season, the Zeta Omicron Chapter of Alpha Phi sorority will be hosting a Gingerbread House Decorating Contest!

There are two ways you can get involved! First, if you wish to enter in the contest, each participant donates a $5 registration fee (or more if you want!) and submits a photo of their gingerbread house by December 6th, 2020. The winner of the contest will receive a $50 gift card! As it’s the holiday season, we encourage you to get together and share this experience with family and friends as much as possible in a COVID-safe manner!

If you do not have time to bake and decorate but still want to contribute, we also are welcoming donations of any amount sent through Venmo to . The philanthropy for our sorority is Women’s Heart Health! And, by you participating and/or donating, you will help us to reach our goals as a chapter of raising money for heart health! All of the proceeds raised through this event will be donated to the Johns Hopkins Women’s Cardiovascular Health Center. You can go to this link to learn more about the center: https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/heart_vascular_institute/centers_excellence/women_cardiovascular_health_center/index.html

It would mean so much to us if you joined this event! Here is the link to register (https://tinyurl.com/y5kuyz2c). You can use a gingerbread kit as a base and be creative with your decorating, or you can make one from scratch! Here is a recipe from The Food Network if you’d like to make one from scratch and to get you thinking: https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/gingerbread-house-recipe-1963254 . Please let us know if you have any questions about registration or the contest in general!

We are so happy to announce that our sister Kinsey Thorpe has been selected to be a part of the newest Alpha Phi Collegiate Advisory Committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. This committee is an important milestone in helping to improve and advance Alpha Phi International. Acknowledging that Panhellenic life needs to combat its foundation of racial discrimination and injustice is only the first step in becoming better allies. It is still a predominantly white institution steeped in privilege, and the change for more inclusivity must reach beyond this committee. We are glad Alpha Phi International has made this effort, but we still have a long way to go. We are so proud of you, Kinsey, and we can't wait to see all that you accomplish!

At Alpha Phi, we recognize that we have both the privilege and platform to spread awareness and, furthermore, support our words with action. In order to begin to do our part in addressing and striving to improve the discriminatory foundations of Panhellenic life, we are pledging a donation match campaign to organizations in support of the BIPOC community. We will be matching your donations up to $4,000 for the following foundations in solidarity with BLM: Black Mamas Matter Alliance Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle National Bail Out
Back on campus, in addition to our existing philanthropy fundraisers, we will be organizing events in support of Leaders of Beautiful Struggle Baltimore to remain consistently committed to BLM. This is not an issue we will let fade; instead, we will continue working until justice and equality is ensured for all.

We, Alpha Phi Johns Hopkins, stand in solidarity with our sisters of color. This statement holds true especially for our black sisters during these times of crisis. Please refer to the attached images for more information on how to take steps toward being an active and effective ally. These images were created by , and on Instagram.

To re-emphasize the values of our chapter: "Alpha Phi joins all who condemn racism, hate, bigotry, and violence. Our sisterhood grieves with the families and friends of those who have suffered injustice. As Alpha Phis, we expect our members to live up to our high ideals and to show the best qualities of character by being fair, inclusive and supportive. Racism, hate, bigotry and violence are in complete contradiction with our purpose.⁣

The Fraternity is committed to providing education and resources that build cultural competence and to actively engage in conversations that challenge one another to be anti-racist. As members of Alpha Phi, we cannot stand silently by as our communities and the world are impacted by violence and injustice. We call on our members and chapters to stand up against hate and to take action to care for those who are harmed by racism.⁣

To our black members and friends, your families and loved ones, we see you, we hear you, and we stand hand-in-hand with you."

To all of our wonderful seniors,
Thank you for everything. For all of the smiles, laughs, and memories you’ve given us. You have made such a positive impact on everyone who has entered our chapter, spreading your kindness to each and every sister. Your ambition and genuine hearts are truly remarkable and will take you so far after graduating. You have all been the greatest role models we could ever ask for, and we can’t thank you enough for all you’ve done for us. We can’t wait to see all that you are bound to accomplish, & you will forever (a Blue Jay!) be in our hearts. We love you!
XO,
Your JHU Alpha Phi sisters
