We’re back on campus, and here are a few of the places you’ll spot a Hopkins engineer as they begin the new semester (including a mystery location):
1. Hackerman Hall, home to the Laboratory for Computational Sensing and Robotics, includes the Robotorium, a testing ground for students and faculty working in robotics.
2. Johns Hopkins Biomedical Engineering (BME) student teams create solutions for medical challenges in BME’s Design Studio.
3. HEMI - Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute's drop tower tests the impact of materials at speeds from 2 to 55 mph, using high speed cameras and load cells that convert mechanical force into electrical signals.
4. You’ll find a clinical-grade da Vinci System in the Swirnow Mock Operating Room where faculty and students are studying how to improve robotic systems used by surgeons.
5. Behind Malone Hall’s sleek facade, students work with faculty to protect Earth from asteroids, among other projects at HEMI, and build tools and applications in the Johns Hopkins University Computer Science department.
6. HEMI’s scanning electron microscope helps scientists see nanometer scale features of materials.
7. Bonus for anyone who spots this secret location.
8. HEMI’s high temperature analysis rig uses furnaces and vacuum-heated chambers to help scientists evaluate how materials react to high temperatures.

Welcome, Hopkins engineers! Before the first week of classes, some 500 first-year and transfer students participated in the “Meet the Flock” event. The annual ritual provides students with tips and guidance on how they can create a positive experience with academic advising and mentorship opportunities.

The event is key to building camaraderie and a culture of caring, says Constanza Miranda, an associate teaching professor in Johns Hopkins Biomedical Engineering and assistant dean for faculty undergraduate mentoring.

“Faculty can demystify the mentorship process and demonstrate that Johns Hopkins is a collaborative place,” says Miranda. “This event is one way we’re showing that, and when classmates, faculty, staff, and our community, come together, we can build a better environment.”

Principal investigators, faculty, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and staff recently convened at the Artificial Intelligence for Materials Design Laboratory (AIMD-L) to discuss the future of AIMD-Net, newly funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF)’s Programmable Cloud Laboratories network. The Hopkins-led team is one node among the network, which is dedicated to building a national group of remote-enabled and self-driving research laboratories. The AIMD-Net team discussed upcoming scientific, educational, and outreach efforts and met with working groups focused on advancing autonomous materials research. This effort is helping to build the infrastructure—and the workforce—needed to reimagine how materials are investigated and discovered.

Two research teams of Hopkins engineers will collaborate with Philips North America and Kitware on projects newly-funded by the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H).

One project, led by Axel Krieger will develop autonomous control and navigation of an powered robotic device to aid clinicians in performing surgical procedures that remove stroke-causing clots from the .

Another team led by Mattias Unberath will create virtual simulations and validation testing on four solutions for stroke.

“Our Johns Hopkins teams are working with leading medical device and software companies on innovative solutions for a condition that is fatal too often,” says Krieger. “We bring a very skilled set of expertise to develop the solutions.”

This summer’s speech and language technology workshop ( ), hosted by the Center for Language and Speech Processing, moved to the collaborative research stage. Scientists and students from institutions around the world formed three interdisciplinary teams to advance several projects, including:

🔤 🎤️ multimodal AI, which integrates many types of data, such as text, images and audio, at once,

💬 spoken conversational systems, such as text-to-speech and chatbots,

🩺 and uncertainty-aware health coaching, which uses machine learning tools that acknowledge when the model doesn’t have enough information to provide guidance.

Genomics news: Scientists have reconstructed the complete genome of a real person, with full sets of chromosomes from each parent, a feat that establishes the most complete and highest quality human genome sequence ever constructed, filling critical gaps.

The findings are expected to advance research, improve the diagnosis of genetic diseases, and make personalized genomics routine in medical care.

The team sequenced the HG002 human genome, a sample from a living donor that is widely used as a reference material by the DNA sequencing and diagnostics industries. With near perfect accuracy, each chromosome spans from "telomere to telomere" and reveals 15% more of the genome, including previously inaccessible portions that are relevant to cancer and neurological disorders.

The team was led by Adam Phillippy, a research professor in the Johns Hopkins University Computer Science department, Johns Hopkins Biomedical Engineering, and the Johns Hopkins Medicine Department of Genetic Medicine.

A new website will track the spread of vaccine-preventable diseases across the United States to offer the public, the media, healthcare providers, public health officials, and policymakers reliable and visual information about current disease trends.

The U.S. Disease Tracker will initially monitor cases of measles, meningitis and pertussis (whooping cough), and later be expanded to include other vaccine-preventable diseases.

The tracker builds on and complements the CDC ’s national disease surveillance infrastructure by providing open access data that is timely, detailed and designed for broad audiences.

The tracker was created and run by Johns Hopkins University, ASTHO, and the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists, in partnership with state and territorial public health agencies.
