🚀 Ever wondered who tells the story behind history-making space missions?

This April, the world watched as NASA Artemis II astronauts completed a record-breaking journey around the moon. Behind the scenes, Johns Hopkins University MA in Science Writing alumnae were hard at work—translating complex, mind-bending science into stories the world could understand.

Now, you can hear directly from them.

Join us on May 12 at 8 p.m. ET for a live conversation with program director Joe Fassler and alumnae Thalia Patrinos ’21, Madison Tuttle ’21, and Andrea Lloyd ’25 as they share their roles on NASA’s Artemis II communications team. From navigating viral moments like “moonjoy” to tackling unexpected challenges, they’ll pull back the curtain on what it takes to communicate science on a global stage.

Students walking across the Homewood campus first thing Monday morning stumbled upon an unexpected dose of whimsy: a sea of flamingos—some pink, some blue—dotting the Keyser Quad, perching on the Johns Hopkins University sign facing Charles Street, and chilling at other locations here and there that struck their fancy.

Taking credit for the shenanigans is a student group known as the Whimsy Progress Administration, which brought back the quirky tradition dating to at least 2004, per The Johns Hopkins News-Letter, in time for the last day of spring semester classes. The flamingo frippery has flitted to and fro over the years, with an especially robust migratory flock spotted at Homewood in May 2014. Blue Jays last peeped their long-legged cousins in September 2023.
