Today, Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc.® pauses to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and to honor the courage, sacrifice, and selflessness displayed in the face of our nation’s darkest moments.

We remember the victims, their families and loved ones, the first responders who answered the call, and all whose lives were forever changed by that day.

May we continue to honor their memory through service, unity, and a commitment to strengthening the communities we call home.

We will never forget.

As we continue honoring the Twelve Honorable Founders of lota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc.®, we recognize the extraordinary life and enduring legacy of our Most Honorable Founder, Lonnie C. "Butch" Spruill Jr.

A Baltimore native, military trailblazer, behavioral-health professional, and civic leader, our Most Honorable Founder Spruill's story is deeply intertwined with the movement for progress that defined his generation. In 1963, he participated in the historic March on Washington-the same year he and eleven other visionary men established lota Phi Theta Fraternity at Morgan State College.

Serving as lota Phi Theta's second Grand Polaris, our Most Honorable Founder, Spruill helped guide and strengthen the young Fraternity during its formative years. His commitment to service continued in the United States Army, where he broke barriers as an African American officer serving in the Army Special Forces-the Green Berets-during the Vietnam era.

Today, Most Honorable Founder Spruill holds a truly singular place in our history as the last living Founder of lota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc.® His life represents a living connection to the men, movements, and moments that shaped our beloved Fraternity.

As we begin our journey toward the 63rd Founders’ Day of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc.®, we proudly honor the life and legacy of Honorable Founder Albert Laurence “Bus” Hicks Jr.

A Baltimore native, historian, civil rights advocate, and visionary leader, Founder Hicks brought a strong sense of history, social consciousness, and purpose to the brotherhood established at Morgan State College in 1963.

Selected as Iota Phi Theta’s first Founding Grand Polaris, he helped provide leadership and direction during the Fraternity’s formative years.
Remembered as spirited, charismatic, and deeply committed to advancing opportunities for African Americans, Founder Hicks exemplified the principles upon which Iota Phi Theta was built.

As we approach the 63rd Anniversary of the founding of lota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc.®, we are proud to introduce Project Candle Burn, a national initiative honoring the lives, legacies, and lasting impact of our Twelve Honorable Founders.

This project has been a true collaborative effort. We extend our sincere appreciation to our National Historian and his team, along with the Brothers who worked behind the scenes with the National Communications Team to research, review, refine, and bring this vision to life.
We ask that Brothers remain patient with us throughout this rollout. Great care has been taken with every detail. Each historical rendering has been painstakingly reviewed and refined with the goal of representing our Founders with the dignity, respect, and historical reverence they deserve!

Most importantly, Project Candle Burn has received the approval of our last living Honorable Founder, making this tribute even more meaningful as we prepare to share it with the Brotherhood.

Beginning today and continuing through Founders' Day, we will turn our attention to each of our Twelve Honorable Founders—one Founder at a time-sharing their stories, contributions, and the legacy they entrusted to generations of lota Men.

This is more than a countdown to September 19, it's a celebration of the men who lead the way.

As part of lota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc's historic partnership with Kentucky State University, we had the opportunity to tour the campus, engage with students, and experience the rich history and tradition of KSU. 💫

Our connection to Kentucky State spans more than four decades through the Alpha Omicron Chapter, chartered March 31, 1981. Today, that legacy enters a new chapter as we strengthen the bridge between Brotherhood, Scholarship, Leadership, and lifelong professional development. 🐎

The Brothers of lota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. proudly celebrates a historic milestone! 🐎

On August 31, 2026, lota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. and Kentucky State University officially entered into a three-year educational partnership, marking the first HBCU educational partnership in the history of our Fraternity. Through the KSU Edge program, eligible lota Phi Theta alumni will receive a 10% tuition reduction toward Kentucky State University's MBA program, along with support throughout the admissions, registration, financial aid, and scholarship processes.

This partnership represents more than an agreement - it is an investment in the continued education, professional advancement, and future of our Brotherhood. 🌟

We look forward to building upon this heroic partnership and creating lasting opportunities of IOTA Men to come.
