The 2026 Community Engagement Workshop centered on University Assisted Community Schools (UACS).

Thank you to Cory Bowman and Mya Gordan from the Netter Center for Community Partnerships at The University of Pennsylvania for engaging attendees in conversation and learning around UACS.

We are grateful for everyone who has already begun this work at Loyola including our workshop presenters who highlighted community partnerships throughout this year:

That’s a wrap on 2025–2026. 🫶🏼

From service events like weekly tutoring, to the Halloween Block Party, Special Olympics, York Road Community Days, Presents for Christmas, and our Forever-Green Thrift Store — this year was full of meaningful moments and real impact across Baltimore.
None of it happens without volunteers, interns, staff, faculty, administrators, and community partners. Thank you for showing up, again and again. Cura Urbi in action.

Congratulations to Rev. Timothy Brown, S.J. on receiving the President’s Medal during today’s Commencement in recognition of his extraordinary service to Loyola University Maryland.

In 1992, Father Brown and Erin Swezey envisioned and co-founded a Center for Values and Service dedicated to helping students engage with social justice, reflect on service experiences, strengthen community partnerships, and pioneer academic service-learning opportunities. That vision evolved into today’s Center for Community, Service and Justice, renamed in 2006 under the leadership of Sr. Catherine “Missy” Gugerty, SSND.

Today, Father Brown continues to inspire every day as a beloved faculty member, passionate advocate for integral ecology, assistant to the president for mission integration, and trusted advisor to CCSJ. His daily witness to justice, service, and care for others continues to shape the Loyola community in profound ways.

To our senior interns: congratulations on your graduation and thank you for a wonderful year!

This year, we had one of our largest graduating intern Class, with 13 students being honored at our Senior Send-Off celebration. Their passion, joy and imagination fueled our team and led to many memorable moments. All of them will be deeply missed, but we know the world will shine a little bit brighter wherever they go. In the words of St. Ignatius of Loyola, “Go forth and set the world on fire”.

📣Calling all rising sophomores!

Make sure to sign up for a Community Engaged Learning Course tomorrow during your course registration time!

📚Community Engaged Learning is a collaboration between students and community members in order to learn from one another and build knowledge together!

🧑🏽‍🏫Students use their skills and course knowledge to support a local organization achieve their goals. In turn, the experiences students have outside the classroom enhance the learning that they are doing in class.

🔍To search for a CELS course go to the course catalog in Self Service and filter the courses by “Course Type”. Students can then select “Community-Engaged Learning” to see all the available CELS courses!
