As a non-traditional student at Coppin State University, Lawrence Young arrived with a clear sense of purpose: to grow personally, serve his community, and create spaces where young people, particularly young Black men, could have honest conversations about mental wellness, purpose, and healing.

“I believe healing starts with honest dialogue,” Young says. “A lot of people are carrying things silently. Sometimes creating space for conversation can change someone’s life.”

A Promise Kept: William Erik Tonnessen’s 28-Year Journey to the Commencement Stage ❤️💙

For William Erik Tonnessen, returning to college was never simply about earning a degree. It was about keeping a promise.

After stepping away from Coppin State University in 1998, William returned to campus in 2022 with a mission to honor the vow he made to his mother before her passing: finish what he started.

Now, after a 28-year journey, the Entertainment Management major, Dean’s List honoree, and Lieutenant with the Baltimore City Fire Department is preparing to walk across the commencement stage.

“Graduating fulfills a promise I made to my mother 28 years ago,” Tonnessen says. “This has been a long journey, and walking across that stage is a final quest completed for both her and myself.”

William hopes his story inspires others who may have paused their education to keep moving forward and reach the finish line.

Congratulations, William! 🎓
