🎉 Big news at UMCES!

Dr. Nina Lamba has accepted the role of our first-ever Executive Director for Innovation and Commercialization.

In this new position, Nina will lead efforts to turn UMCES science into real-world solutions — driving tech transfer, new ventures, and commercialization across the institution.

She’ll continue her role as Assistant Director at IMET alongside this new appointment.

Please join us on Friday, August 28th at 10:00 AM (MPR, Room 2038) as Abdulmajid defends his dissertation, “Understanding Heterotrophic Acetate Metabolism in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.”

His research dives into how this unicellular green alga breaks down acetate for growth, uncovering how disrupting two key genes reshapes the balance between cell growth, lipid storage, and carbohydrate accumulation. It’s work that adds real insight into how algae manage carbon and energy.

Today, IMET welcomed the UMBC core communications team for a site visit, and for most of the group, it was their very first look inside our doors!

Led by Dr. Jennifer Burns and Dr. Yonathan Zohar, the team got a firsthand tour of our Aquaculture Research Center (ARC), where cutting-edge marine science meets real-world impact every single day.

Moments like this remind us why partnerships matter! ✨
