Last week, IMET hosted Common Waters: Aligning Science and Community for a Sustainable Harbor. This brought together scientists, community members, and harbor stewards. When the people doing the research and the people living closest to the water are in the same room, something shifts. Real questions get asked and real connections get made. That is what a sustainable harbor looks like in practice. Thank you to everyone who joined Common Waters and continues to show up for Baltimore's waterways!

🎓 Commencement Day at UMCES!

This afternoon, the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science celebrates the graduating class of 2026 at the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology in Baltimore.

We are proud to confer master’s and doctorate degrees to the next generation of environmental scientists and leaders — and to welcome keynote speaker Dr. Caroline M. Solomon, President of the National Technical Institute for the Deaf and Vice President of Rochester Institute of Technology.

IMET’s Dr. Eric Schott was featured in a NYT article!

The Potomac River sewage emergency may be officially “over,” but scientists say the damage isn’t. Over 240 million gallons of raw sewage poured into the river in January and researchers are still finding contamination months later.

Though river monitoring shows bacteria levels have declined, scientists and environmentalists said a full recovery isn’t yet assured.
