We begin our look at model organisms with mice and rats. These little guys have a lot going for them. They're intelligent, and they exhibit behavior that is easy to observe -- such as watching them solve a maze. They're great for studying all sorts of behaviors, the aging process, memory, problem-solving, disease, and much more. Many, many researchers rely on mice and rats to learn more about how the brain works. For example, Kay Tye at Kavli Institute for Brain and Mind use them to study neural circuits and behavior, while Richard Huganir at Kavli NDI Hopkins research how neurons function.

All week we'll be talking about model organisms, the animals who teach us so much about the brain, and ourselves. Follow along with .
