The School is one of seven professional schools and a graduate school located at the University of Maryland, a thriving center for life sciences research and community service. Through its education, research, and service programs, the School of Pharmacy strives to improve the hea

lth and well-being of society by aiding in the discovery, development, and use of medicines. The School of Pharmacy is comprised of three departments, Pharmacy Practice and Science, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Pharmaceutical Health Services Research. The Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science promotes the health and well being of the public by advancing the practice of pharmacy and generating and disseminating new knowledge related to pharmacy practice and drug use. The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences conducts state-of-the-art research and discovery in the areas of cellular and chemical biology, neuroscience, pharmacology, biopharmaceutics and drug delivery. The Pharmaceutical Health Services Research Department provides teaching, service, and scholarly activities related the behavioral sciences, pharmacoeconomics, pharmacoepidemiology, and regulatory issues. In addition to cutting edge research in drug delivery mechanisms, cost impact studies, basic drug discovery and development, and disease management, the School engages in a wide variety of professional practice activities, partnering with over 200 community pharmacies, hospitals, nursing homes, and other agencies to provide services to citizens and practitioners around the State and across the nation.

Janet Edwards, BSP, MS ’21, has always been curious about what comes next.

During pharmacy school, she explored opportunities across the pharmaceutical industry and quickly discovered that she loved the people, flexibility, and possibilities that came with a career in pharma. That curiosity eventually led to a 28-year career at GSK and, years later, to UMSOP to pursue her interest in regulatory science.

As an alumnus of our MS in Regulatory Science program, Janet brings together health, business, science, and regulatory knowledge in her work, while also mentoring students and staying connected to the pharmacy community through alumni leadership.

Her advice to students is simple: “Observe. Ask questions. Be open to new opportunities.”

Nine student pharmacists have been selected as recipients of the 2026-2027 Wagner Family Pharmapreneurship Scholarships.

The scholarships support students interested in exploring innovation and pharmapreneurship, giving them the opportunity to develop ideas and skills that can help shape the future of health care.

Great leaders don’t just identify challenges. They find ways to solve them.

Yogitha Pazhani, PharmD ’19, a clinical pharmacy specialist at MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital and a UMSOP preceptor, has built her pharmacy career around that mindset.

While a student at UMSOP, Pazhani recognized that many students felt unsure about networking and created a workshop to help her peers develop those skills. Today, she continues to bring that same innovative spirit to experiential education by developing resources and curriculum that help student pharmacists gain meaningful learning experiences during their rotations.

Her journey from student pharmacist to preceptor is a reminder that the skills you build today can help shape the future of the profession tomorrow.
