Veterans Day has special meaning for Justin Grant ’25, ’27G, a student in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program.

From 2008 to 2018, Grant served as a Special Operations Combat Medic in the U.S. Army, deploying eight times and earning a Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart and several other awards. Now, through his involvement as the director of the EIF-Equine Immersion Foundation, he is helping veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder by using horses in a therapeutic setting.

“Veterans tend to isolate themselves quite a bit. So events like Veterans Day—anything that can bring the community back together is really, really important. For whatever reason, we have this apprehension [about] doing reunions. Like, ‘That’s not me. I’m not doing that. I don’t need that recognition.’ It’s not for that, it’s to bring people back together. And with Veterans Day, I think it’s a great opportunity.”

Grant also urges veterans to consider getting involved with mental health non-profits. “I had a very hard time when I transitioned from the military connecting with any of my counselors because none of them had served before. Once I was actually working with counselors who were veterans, I was like, ‘They get it. They understand this.’ So if anyone is considering a career in counseling or they’re just interested in it, it’s an excellent way to get plugged in with the community. I really employ you to do it. You go to school to learn how to be a very good friend to someone in need.”

Today, in honor of Veterans Day, we revealed our new mural that was designed and executed by Brewer High School Art and AF JROTC students.

It was a wonderful collaborative experience and the students did an amazing job under the leadership of Kat Johnson, Brewer High School Art Teacher.

A big thank you to our Husson Alumni & Friends, Brewer High School Art Club and Brewer High School Air Force Junior ROTC without whom this event would not have been possible.

More photos and commentary to come!

Thank you Veterans!
