College of the Atlantic

College of the Atlantic Education for a living world College of the Atlantic is the first college in the US to focus on the relationship between humans and the environment.

COA is The Princeton Review’s #1 Green College from 2016-2022! The intentionally small school of 350 students and 35 faculty members offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in human ecology—the study of how humans interact with our natural, social, and built environments. Each student develops their own course of study in human ecology, collaborating and innovating across multiple disciplines.

In Zoological Field Sketching, students develop observational drawing skills while studying local animal life through museum specimens, taxidermy mounts, and live animals. Classes take place both in the COA Dorr Museum of Natural History and out in the field across Acadia National Park and beyond. Students learn techniques for field sketching and visual note-taking as tools for observing and documenting the natural world. 🌿

Here at COA, science is not only taught sitting down in classrooms, but also moving around in Acadia National Park. Classes like Organic Chemistry II offer a more traditional learning experience indoors, while Biology: Form and Function labs go out into the field to see the concepts they learn about in class come to fruition in nature 🏞️🪲🧪

Did you know that the COA student body is nearly 25% international? The annual Cultural Show is a student-organized event showcasing dance, music, poetry, and other talents that celebrate the many diverse parts of the world our students come from. We love sharing our traditions with each other! Thank you so much to everyone who helped to make this a great event.

Traditional outdoor skill training at College of the Atlantic cultivates independence, supports mental and physical health, and helps build meaningful relationships with the natural world. We regularly travel to Maine’s North Woods to work on traditional skill building with Alexandra Conover Bennet ‘77, a Registered Maine Guide with nearly 50 years of wilderness experience. Alexandra’s deep knowledge of the landscape, traditional tools, and teaching expertise always make for an energizing and restorative time.

The COA Spinsters make history as the first collegiate team to compete in the Back to Back Wool Challenge, where competitors sheared a sheep, spun wool into yarn, and knit a sweater all in one day. The Spinsters raised $1500 for Sarah's House, a cancer care charity. 🐑🧶🎉
