LIGO Film & Q&A | LSU’s Role in a Historic Discovery
Celebrate 10 Years of Discovery

On September 14, 2015, the world heard the universe in a new way. A faint signal—born of two black holes spiraling together 1.3 billion years ago—arrived on Earth. It wasn’t light, but a quivering of space-time called gravitational waves, first predicted by Albert Einstein a century earlier.

That moment marked the first-ever direct detection of gravitational waves by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO). LSU students, faculty, and researchers played a major role in this breakthrough, helping launch a new era of astrophysics.

Join us as we celebrate this major milestone with a screening of the award-winning documentary LIGO, followed by a Q&A with LSU experts who helped make it possible.

Event Details:
📅 Monday, September 15
⏰ 5:00 PM
📍 LSU Union Theater
🎟 Free & open to all

Come see the story of a discovery that proved Einstein right, and placed LSU at the center of history.

Join us this fall for our public Star Party Nights—come see Saturn, Jupiter, and the Moon through our telescopes and learn about the wonders of the night sky. 🌌🔭

🎯 All events are weather-dependent — clear skies = telescopes out, clouds = sad astronomers. Keep an eye on the skies (and our page) for more details! 🌠 Let’s make some cosmic memories together.

📍 Location: LSU’s Landolt Astronomical Observatory, located on the roof of Nicholson Hall

🎟️ Free & open to everyone!

Set your alarms: 1 AM, Sunday August 3rd — LSU’s Landolt Astronomical Observatory is hosting a special viewing of the Titan Transit!

🌕 What’s Happening?

Titan (Saturn’s biggest moon, even larger than Mercury) will pass in front of Saturn, casting a massive, visible shadow across the planet’s surface and rings.

This rare sight is only possible during special seasons every 15 years, and it’s visible through our 11.5” Clark Refractor telescope.

Don’t miss your chance to see a celestial alignment that wows astronomers around the world. Come stargaze with us 🌌
