Booker T. Washington and Julius Rosenwald collaborated on one of the most successful efforts to address the lack of educational opportunities for poor southern African Americans. They created the Rosenwald Fund, which provided architectural plans and start-up funds for one or two room schools. Communities had to implement the plans, raise additional funds, hire schoolteachers and make sure students filled the seats. From 1917 to 1932 the Rosenwald Fund helped construct over 5,300 schools in 15 states across the rural South.

Happy 60th birthday to the first African American woman to travel to outer space, Dr. Mae Jemison!

"Don't let anyone rob you of your imagination, your creativity, or your curiosity. It's your place in the world; it's your life. Go on and do all you can with it, and make it the life you want to live."

Dr. Jemison, thank you for blazing a trail and showing young girls that look like you, what happens when you dream big and reach beyond the stars.
