What happens when students can see how one decision affects an entire building project from design and construction to cost, safety, sustainability and long-term performance?

A $744,660 U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) award will bring together researchers from engineering, education and design to explore how digital twin technology can help undergraduate students develop the holistic thinking skills needed for increasingly complex careers in architecture, engineering and construction.

Led by LSU Construction Management Associate Professor Yong-Cheol Lee, and in cooperation with researchers from the LSU College of Human Sciences and Education and the LSU College of Art + Design, the interdisciplinary project will create a digital twin-integrated learning environment where students can explore realistic problems, test decisions and see their impacts across an entire project life cycle.

When The Golden Band From Tigerland takes the field in Tiger Stadium tomorrow night, keep an eye on the drum major leading the way. There’s an LSU Engineer under that hat. 💜💛

Dylan Rousselle is a senior in Biological Engineering and, this semester, LSU’s drum major. Tomorrow’s season opener against Clemson will mark his first time leading pregame in Tiger Stadium in that role.

Dylan is just as comfortable taking on a challenge in the lab. As an undergraduate researcher, he has worked with Biological Engineering Professor Todd Monroe, bringing the same focus, preparation and attention to detail to research that he now brings to one of LSU’s most visible traditions.

And this is only part of Dylan’s story. We’re working on a closer look at the Biological Engineering senior who moves between research and one of LSU’s biggest stages. Keep an eye out for it soon.

🎉 Celebrating 25 years of service!

On Monday, we had the opportunity to recognize Dr. Bijaya Karki for an incredible 25 years of service to LSU and the Division of Computer Science & Engineering. 💜💛

For more than two decades, Dr. Karki has been an important part of our division and its story. From serving as our Division Chair for 13 years to advancing research in high-performance computing and computational materials science, his contributions have helped shape our division while making an impact well beyond LSU.

Over the years, Dr. Karki’s work has earned both national and university recognition, including an National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award and the LSU Rainmaker Award. His research has also received support from NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration and other federal agencies.

A 25-year milestone is a special one, and we are grateful for the years Dr. Karki has dedicated to our students, faculty, research, and the continued growth of our division.

🌊 Turning ocean waves into reliable electricity takes more than capturing their energy. It requires making that power predictable, controllable and ready for the grid.

LSU ECE Associate Chair Mehdi Farasat has received a $445,503 National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to develop advanced control and energy-management technologies aimed at making wave energy a more dependable resource, particularly for coastal, islanded and remote communities.

The project combines physics-based modeling, machine learning, reinforcement learning, energy storage and power electronics to help wave energy systems respond intelligently to changing ocean conditions.

Another win for safer, more reliable digital systems. 💻

Assistant Professors Umar Farooq and Phani Vadrevu have received a combined $771,822 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for research tackling two increasingly important challenges in computing: building more reliable software and defending online services against sophisticated malicious bot campaigns.

Farooq’s $300,000 NSF FutureCore project will explore new ways to turn complex software framework documentation into rules that can help developers identify errors, security issues and other problems in their code.

Vadrevu’s $471,822 project will study the human-operated bot farms behind large-scale attacks on ticketing platforms, government services, retailers, travel sites and other online systems—and develop better ways to detect and disrupt them.

Both LSU Division of Computer Science & Engineering researchers are also recent NSF CAREER Award recipients, adding to the division’s growing research momentum.

As Chair Abe Baggili puts it: “This is exactly where a great computer science program should be: working on difficult problems before they become even bigger ones.”

As hurricane season moves into one of its most active stretches, research into how our buildings and communities withstand major storms is especially timely.

LSU Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Assistant Professor Sabarethinam Kameshwar has received a $586,625 National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award to study how hurricane-induced building damage can change storm-surge flooding and the forces experienced by structures that remain standing.

“Understanding how damage to one structure changes the conditions experienced by neighboring structures is essential for improving the way we assess hurricane risk,” Kameshwar said.

His research will combine large-scale physical experiments and computational modeling to create a more realistic picture of what happens in coastal communities as buildings fail during extreme storms. The findings could ultimately help improve hurricane-damage simulations, engineering standards and coastal resilience planning.

The project will also help prepare the next generation of natural hazards engineers through a new undergraduate course, community college partnerships, teacher workshops and STEM outreach.

Louisiana has the resources, expertise, and industrial experience to help shape the future of carbon management, and LSU Engineering is working to make sure the state also has the research, technology, and workforce to lead it.

On Sept. 9–10, the LSU Petroleum Engineering department will bring energy leaders to Baton Rouge for its second annual Carbon Management Symposium. The event will connect industry, academia, and government around emerging technologies, infrastructure, workforce needs, and opportunities across Louisiana and the Gulf Coast.

The symposium is just one part of LSU Petroleum Engineering’s growing leadership in this area, from launching the nation’s first undergraduate concentration in Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage to developing a first-of-its-kind CO₂ research well on LSU’s campus at the LSU PERTT lab.
