Proud to share that Phani Vadrevu of the LSU Division of Computer Science & Engineering has been awarded an NSF CAREER Award, the National Science Foundation (NSF)'s most competitive grant for early-career faculty who exemplify the role of teacher/scholar. This recognition reflects not only his research excellence but also the strength of the division's commitment to advancing the field. Congratulations on this well-earned milestone!

Dr. Phani Vadrevu has received a National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award, one of the nation's highest honors for early-career faculty.

The NSF CAREER Award recognizes faculty members who are advancing their fields through innovative research while also making a lasting impact through education and mentorship. It is one of the most competitive awards offered by the NSF and is considered a significant achievement for researchers early in their careers.

Dr. Vadrevu's work focuses on cybersecurity, helping identify and combat emerging online threats while making the digital world safer and more secure. His research continues to push the field forward while creating opportunities for LSU students to engage in meaningful, high-impact research.

This award is a tremendous accomplishment for Dr. Vadrevu and another example of the world-class research taking place within our division and the LSU College of Engineering.

🌪️ As hurricane season begins, LSU researchers are using the WISE Open-Jet Facility to study how communities can become more resilient to extreme weather while supporting sustainable energy solutions.

Current projects include:
☀️ Large-scale testing of elevated solar arrays
🏠 Studies of rooftop solar systems and their interaction with high winds
🌳 Nature-based structural solutions inspired by the way trees respond to wind

“As we enter the 2026 hurricane season, our focus at the LSU WISE Open-Jet Facility is shifting from purely surviving storms to architecting climate-responsive infrastructure that pairs clean energy with high-velocity wind resilience. Our recent testing demonstrates that we do not have to sacrifice sustainability for safety; in fact, strategically integrated rooftop solar panels can actually serve as passive aerodynamic mitigation devices, reducing destructive wind uplift forces on homes by up to 63%.”— Dr. Aly Mousaad Aly, P.E., Associate Professor in the LSU Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering

What if electricity could be generated from small temperature changes without burning fuel?

LSU Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Professor Guoqiang Li and Postdoctoral Researcher Chengbin Yu have developed a new method that turns tiny temperature differences into electricity using phase-changing materials.

The team is now exploring industry partnerships and commercialization opportunities through the LSU Innovation and Technology Commercialization office.

Quantum computers could eventually break the cryptography protecting banks, hospitals, power grids, and online businesses. Preparing for that future is one of the biggest cybersecurity challenges ahead.

That’s where Umar Farooq comes in.

Farooq, an assistant professor in the LSU Division of Computer Science & Engineering, has earned a prestigious National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award to develop tools that help identify and replace vulnerable cryptography before quantum-era cyberattacks become a reality.

His work combines cybersecurity, software engineering, and AI to help organizations transition to post-quantum security safely and efficiently.

For decades, Roy O. Martin III has helped shape the future of Louisiana through leadership, philanthropy, and a deep commitment to education.

On Saturday evening, LSU honored Martin with an honorary doctorate in recognition of his lasting impact on the LSU System, workforce development, and communities across the state.

From supporting projects like Patrick F. Taylor Hall and the new Construction & Advanced Manufacturing Building to investing in healthcare education, scholarships, and student success initiatives across Louisiana, Roy and Kathy Martin’s support has helped generations of students pursue new opportunities.

“Roy Martin’s impact on LSU cannot be overstated,” said Vicki Colvin. “His commitment to education, workforce development, and innovation has strengthened communities across Louisiana and helped generations of students succeed.”

Nearly 950 new engineers, computer scientists, and construction managers crossed the stage Saturday night at the LSU College of Engineering Spring 2026 Commencement ceremony. 🎓

Graduates came from 40 states and 29 countries, earning distinctions in leadership, research, communication, academics, and community engagement while preparing to make an impact across Louisiana and beyond.

The ceremony also included the presentation of an honorary doctorate to Roy O. Martin III for his decades of leadership, philanthropy, and service to LSU and the state.

What if the library could come to you on a bicycle? 🚲📚

LSU engineering students from LSU Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and LSU ECE partnered with the East Baton Rouge Parish Library to create a custom-built “book bike,” a miniature mobile library designed to bring books directly into the community. Instead of buying an off-the-shelf trailer, the students designed and built the entire project themselves, from the welded steel frame to the lightweight wooden body.

Front Yard Bikes installed the battery-powered electrical system using electric assist (a built-in electric motor that helps to turn the pedals) making transporting heavy loads easier, especially at the bike’s maximum capacity of 800 pounds.

The result is something eye-catching, practical, and built to spark curiosity and conversation wherever it goes.
