Thank You for an Incredible Evening!

Southern University’s College of Humanities and Interdisciplinary Studies (CoHIS) extends a heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who joined us for the Panel Discussion & Closing Reception celebrating the special exhibition, Free as They Want to Be: Artists Committed to Memory, curated by Deborah Willis, Ph.D. and Cheryl Finley, Ph.D.

We are especially grateful to Dr. Cynthia Bryant, Dean of the College of Humanities and Interdisciplinary Studies, for her leadership and support, and to Dr. Robyn Merrick for skillfully moderating this important and engaging conversation.

We were honored to welcome co-curator Dr. Cheryl Finley and Southern University Visual Arts professors and exhibiting artists Randell Henry and John Alleyne, whose perspectives helped create a meaningful discussion centered on art, history, memory, identity, and the importance of preserving our stories through creative expression.

Thank you to our students, faculty, staff, community members, partners, and supporters who attended and helped make this exhibition and its closing celebration so special. Your presence reinforces the importance of bringing impactful arts and humanities programming to The Bluff.

The exhibition explores the role photography and film play—historically and today—in remembering the legacies of slavery.
