Call for Papers
LSU Department of French Studies Graduate Student Association 2026 Annual Conference
Theme: Literature, What For?
Location: Hodges Hall, Louisiana State University
Date: March 4-6, 2026
Mode: Hybrid
Keynote: Dr. Annabel Kim, Department Chair and Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures (French) at Harvard University

Why talk—talk again—about “modern and contemporary French literature” at the beginning of the 21st century? What values can literature create and transmit in today's world? What place should it occupy in the public sphere? Is it beneficial in life? Why defend its presence in schools? These are the questions Antoine Compagnon discussed with his colleagues at the Collège de France nearly twenty years ago. The evolution of new technologies such as AI in a world threatened by various natural and human phenomena revives the need to revisit these questions and reposition literary studies among other disciplines in this 21st century where we are urgently seeking innovative approaches to address global challenges.

The Department of French Studies Graduate Student Association at Louisiana State University invites you to join other scholars at its conference themed: “Literature, what for?” and share with professors and colleagues your research on the role and impact of literature on others such as: Authors, Readers, Characters, Cinema, Society, Culture, Identity, Language, History, Memory, Politics, Migration, Violence, Resistance, Justice, Environment, Economics, Education, Teaching, Technology, AI
