Some engineering projects don't end at graduation. ❤️🏖️

Back in 2018, a team of LSU ECE and LSU Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering seniors took on a unique Senior Capstone Design challenge: build a motorized beach wheelchair for Cheslyn Simpson, who has a neuromuscular disorder that made trips across the sand nearly impossible.

The goal wasn't simply to build a wheelchair. It was to help Cheslyn continue a cherished family tradition of spending time together at the beach. The students worked side by side with Cheslyn throughout the design process, making sure every decision reflected her needs and ideas.

Nearly eight years later, we received this message and photo from her family:

"The C-Boo back at beach with a few revisions. Traction tires on the two front tires. "

The chair has seen a few upgrades over the years, but it's still doing exactly what those students hoped it would do: creating memories and giving Cheslyn the freedom to enjoy the beach with the people she loves.

Sometimes the true impact of engineering isn't measured at Senior Design Day. It's measured years later, when something you built is still changing someone's life.

📣 We're excited to announce that Guoqiang Li has been named Associate Dean for Research in the LSU College of Engineering.

A longtime faculty member in the LSU Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and internationally recognized researcher, Li will work alongside Dean Vicki Colvin to strengthen the college's research enterprise, support faculty collaboration, and expand opportunities for innovation across every engineering discipline.

"By building on the college's outstanding research strengths and developing strategic partnerships with government, industry, and academia, we will continue to increase the impact of our research while educating the next generation of engineering leaders," Li said.

LSU Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering student Gabriel Pacheco-Ethridge has been named a 2026 Astronaut Scholar by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation.

This year, ASF selected 79 students from 54 colleges and universities across the U.S. for one of the nation’s most prestigious undergraduate STEM scholarships. Astronaut Scholars receive scholarship support, mentorship, professional development, and networking opportunities with astronauts, alumni, and industry leaders.

LSU Engineering researchers are taking on big health challenges, from drug-resistant cancer to safer MRI imaging to new technology that could expand access to ADHD behavioral therapy.

Three faculty-led projects have received more than $5.5 million in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding, supporting research by Manas Gartia, Jimmy Lawrence and David C. Shepherd.

Their work shows how engineering can help drive new tools for medicine, diagnosis and patient care.
