The Center for Resiliency proudly celebrated our inaugural class of Dissertation Resilience Fellows, led by Dr. Nina Gjoci.

This milestone reflects our commitment to supporting research that bridges theory with practice and addresses pressing challenges impacting Southeast Texas’ readiness to respond to crises.

We are excited to see the meaningful work these fellows will bring to our communities, industries, and future resilience efforts. As Dr. Gjoci closed the celebration: β€œLet’s do research!”

Resiliency Fellow Misty Almasi discusses how changing student population and public funding can impact student success in her lastest commentary,"Maintaining High Performing Schools Amidst Demographic Shifts"
"The practical impact is that students with academic, medical, or behavioral challenges will remain in the public schools along with those whose parents do not have the means to take advantage of it. vouchers, while total funding for public education continues to go down. To successfully educate all students, it is essential that schools provide teachers with the appropriate staff development and support to ensure that all students can meet grade-level standards."

Resiliency Fellow Sima Besharat Ferdowsi discusses how electronic assemblies respond to mechanical stress in her lastest commentary,"Nonlinear Identification of Electronic Assemblies Under the Motion Excitation."

"In summary, the practical stakes are straightforward: fewer unplanned shutdowns, lower maintenance costs, safer working conditions. But the longer-term contribution may be in establishing a more rigorous baseline for how the industry thinks about electronic reliability in harsh environments. That has value beyond any single facility or storm season."

Resiliency Fellow Le'Keisha D. Johnson discusses how student success extends beyond the classroom in her lastest commentary,"Funding the Foundations of College Student Success: Why Extracurricular Activities Deserve Institutional Priority."

"College students in southeast Texas and beyond can benefit from involvement in extracurricular activities, but support from administration and policy makers is needed to protect these types of opportunities. As universities experience budget cuts across Texas and the country, it is imperative that university administrators continue to advocate for funding for student involvement offices that provide opportunities for extracurricular activity participation. Benefits from these activities lead to professional skill development, connectedness, and resilience which supports persistence and degree completion."

Resiliency Fellow Sharath Daida, PhD discusses why cyber risk must be part of resilience planning in his lastest commentary, "Rethinking Industrial Resiliency: Integrating Cyber Risk into Process Safety through the HDPE Process Lens."

"Resiliency is no longer just redundancy. It is designing systems that remain safe even when adversaries are actively attempting to destabilize them. The petrochemical industry has historically evolved after catastrophic events such as Flixborough, Piper Alpha, and Bhopal. Today, the next class of industrial catastrophe may originate not from corrosion or overpressure but from a keyboard. If we continue to treat cybersecurity and process safety as parallel domains, resiliency will remain incomplete. The above case illustrates a path forward: integrating cyber exploit modelling, architectural mapping, and classical LOPA into a unified framework capable of addressing modern industrial threats. Resiliency in 2026 is not just about surviving failure. It is about surviving intent."
