New Faculty Spotlight!
Please join us in welcoming Ashley Wolf, MSN, RN, to the JGDSON faculty family! ❤️🖤

For Ashley, joining the JGDSON is more than a new role, it is a homecoming. Having earned her RN from Lamar, she is honored to return as an instructor and work alongside many of the same faculty members who inspired and shaped her nursing journey.

Ashley is passionate about nursing education. She finds tremendous joy in witnessing students' "aha" moments and considers it a privilege to contribute to their growth, confidence, and success.

Ashley’s Advice to Future Nurses: "Never stop learning and never stop growing. As nurses, every experience gives us a learning opportunity to become better nurses, stronger advocates, and better caregivers for our patients." Welcome to the Cardinal family, Ashley!

Guided by Sigma’s core values of dedication to the advancement of knowledge, teaching, learning, and service, this conference highlights the translation of research into practice, education, leadership, and policy to improve health outcomes locally and globally.

The students, faculty, and staff of the JoAnne Gay Dishman School of Nursing proudly showed their Cardinal spirit by wearing RED and celebrating Lamar University pride on Friday!
From classrooms to labs, hospitals, and offices, JGDSON came together to support the Cardinal tradition and showcase what it means to be part of the Lamar family. JGDSON needs your help welcoming one of our newest faculty members, Byron Young! Byron brings a wealth of experience to our department, having dedicated over 35 years to nursing as both an RN and Nurse Practitioner. He states, "Nursing has been my passion, and I am grateful for the experiences and relationships that have shaped my career. I look forward to sharing that knowledge in the academic setting and helping future nurses grow into confident leaders and educators."

JGDSON Alumni Spotlight: Cheryl Smith, MSN, FNP-C 🌟

The JoAnne Gay Dishman School of Nursing is proud to highlight another outstanding alumnus in our Alumni Spotlight Series!

Meet Cheryl Smith, whose nursing journey is a testament to perseverance, lifelong learning, and compassionate care. Cheryl articulated from LVN to ADN through Lamar University's Upward Mobility Program. From there, her path led her through critical care nursing to earning an MSN from McNeese State University in 2014. She currently serves as a Family Nurse Practitioner at Beaumont Pediatric Center, where she has cared for children and families since 2016.

With more than three decades in nursing, Cheryl credits her success to adaptability, continuous learning, and a deep commitment to patient care. Her advice to current nursing students:

"Success in nursing is not about perfection. It is about perseverance, adaptability, and caring deeply for people. Be open to growth, trust the process, and remember that your patients will often remember how you made them feel just as much as the care you provided.”

Thank you, Cheryl, for inspiring the next generation of nurses through your dedication, leadership, and passion for serving others.

The JoAnne Gay Dishman School of Nursing and the College of Nursing and Health Professions are humbled to have been recently recognized by the Southeast Texas Food Bank with a Volunteer Appreciation Recognition Award. In 2025, our students contributed over 250 hours of volunteer service to support food security across our region. Accepting the award are Dr. Gina Hale, and the Community-Based Service Learning (CBSL) Coordinator, and faculty member Becky Seymour. Ms. Seymour states, "Our students serve many agencies in the area, and we are so excited and proud to receive this honor on behalf of our students."
