โ€œDr. Davis, through her instruction in judicial process and constitutional law, taught me how to think like a lawyer,โ€ Steven says. โ€œProfessor Katey McCall, through her coaching in Moot Court, also taught me how to think like a lawyer as well as introducing me to legal writing.โ€

SUMMER CIVIC LEADERSHIP ADVENTURE continuedโ€ฆin Peru!

๐Ÿ˜ท๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿฆท ๐๐š๐ญ๐š๐ฅ๐ข๐ž ๐ƒ๐ข๐œ๐ค๐ž๐ง๐ฌ and Pre-Dental peers from MedLife returned to Lima this Summer to continue their service to improve dental care access for Peruvians. ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ช

Biology Pre-Dental senior Natalie:

๐Ÿš set up mobile dental clinics in underserved pueblos jovenes on outskirts of Lima

๐Ÿชฅ taught children how to brush teeth as a way to instill dental hygiene practices at earliest age possible to help prevent malnutrition, meningitis, tooth loss, and more

๐Ÿฆท assisted dentists with suction, curing lights, and sanitation during cavity fillings and tooth extractions

โ€œI learned the importance of health education, proper patient communication, and access to quality care. I learned and saw so much, and I wouldn't trade this experience for anything!โ€ Natalie says.

โšœ๏ธ ๐Ÿ“œ ๐Ÿ”ฑ The legacy continues!!! MedLife formed at LU thanks to an idea HSA mentee ๐€๐ฆ๐›๐ž๐ซ ๐Œ๐š๐ซ๐ž๐๐ข๐š (๐‚๐ฅ๐š๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‘) shared with her peer mentor ๐Œ๐š๐œ๐ค๐ž๐ง๐ณ๐ข๐ž ๐’๐š๐ฏ๐š๐ ๐ž (๐‚๐ฅ๐š๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ). SUMMER CIVIC LEADERSHIP ADVENTURE

โš•๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ท๐Ÿฉบ Riobamba, Ecuador, was the destination this Summer for HSA Vice President ๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง๐ง๐š ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ญ๐ญ๐ž๐ฆ. ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡จ

As a MedLife civic leader, the Biology Pre-Med senior worked with indigenous communities who spoke a combination of Spanish and Kichwa. To gain the trust of a community that relies on traditional healers, Brianna:

๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ”Ž๐Ÿ’ก worked creatively while evaluating concerns (from hip pain to pap smears) of Catholic female patients who preferred to have husbands present, yet also declined examinations that required exposing shoulders, upper legs, abdomen, and the like

๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿซ adjusted expectations for patientsโ€™ oxygen saturation levels: under 93% usually warrants medical attention, but the high elevation of this Andes Mountains region means healthy patients are usually within 85% to 89%

๐Ÿšฐ๐Ÿ›ข๐Ÿ’ง helped construct a community water tank and distributed medicine that was sourced locally, all to ensure patients can continue treatment after volunteers leave

โ€œOn one of our first days in Ecuador, we met with the community that requested the water tank and spent the day learning to milk a cow ๐Ÿฅ›๐Ÿ„, shear a sheep ๐Ÿ‘, and had the opportunity to taste local grains๐ŸŒพ. The trip was definitely hard work as we combated altitude sickness, reduced oxygen, and even hiked up hills with bags of rocks,โ€ Brianna says.

๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ™Œ โ€œBut was worth it a million times over because at the end of the day, medicine is not just for those who can afford it, understand it, or who live near it, but for all lives.โ€

Congratulations to ๐ŸŒŸ ๐ƒ๐ซ. ๐€๐ฌ๐ก๐ฐ๐ข๐ง๐ข ๐Š๐ฎ๐œ๐ค๐ง๐จ๐จ๐ซ ๐ŸŒŸ, our Honors Professor of 2024, and ๐ŸŒŸ ๐ˆ๐ฌ๐š๐›๐ž๐ฅ๐ฅ๐š ๐“๐ซ๐š๐ง ๐ŸŒŸ, Biology Pre-Med senior, for receiving the Regentsโ€™ Teacher and Regentsโ€™ Student Scholar awards, respectively.

Even more fun: Dr. Kucknoor and Isabella know each other well!! โš•๏ธIsabella serves as the Social Media Coordinator for LUโ€™s chapter of the American Medical Student Association (AMSA), which is advised by Dr. Kucknoor.
