The new school year is just around the corner, but there’s still time for a couple more internship highlights! Today we’re celebrating DIRECTOR Nathan! Nathan writes: “I interned at Meydenbauer Bay Yacht Club Youth Sailing as Director and Head Coach. In my internship, I was tasked with supervising instructors and coaches, maintenance of equipment, facilitation of weekly summer camps & race team programs, and creation/implementation of policies, staff training, and emergency action plans. Fond memories include traveling around the PNW coaching at regattas and hosting events!“

Sometimes an intern and an internship site are a pretty perfect match, and that was certainly the case with Mace and Rite of Passage Journeys! Mace writes, “I’ve been the base camp logistics intern at Rite of Passage Journeys and have discovered so much about the behind the scenes logistics that it takes to run a non-profit, along with finding my own way to sink into the spiritual as a wilderness guide. I was able to guide two trips: Q***r Kinnection and Solo Crossing (3 week backpacking!), bringing youth into the wilderness and supporting their individual journeys through bringing beautiful attention to the mundane. My favorite part has been being to witness the growth of these youth’s smiles as they sink more into their true authentic selves with the guidance of Mother Nature ❤ I’m so grateful for all that Rite of Passage Journeys does for the earth and the beings who live here!”

Are you ready to live vicariously through Josh’s internship highlight? Josh writes: “I’m up in Alaska working for Adventure Sitka as a kayak guide taking people out along coastline or through a little island chain a few miles from town. I get to drive a boat out most days for work, kayak, watch whales, and fix boats. I got to take a ride in a float plane for work and got to see a few whales breaching on employee outings.”

Today’s joy-filled internship highlight comes from Hannah! Hannah writes, “Hey everyone! This summer I worked as the program and support intern at Sound View Camp in Longbranch, Washington. I lived on-site at this camp as a teenager and am so happy being back. I’ve been learning how to run programs, lead a team of staff, and have gotten the opportunity to work as a true camp director. I’ve been able to use so many of the skills I’ve learned in RML classes and from my fellow phasers at camp. My favorite part has been working with such an amazing team of counselors who have worked so hard to make this camp great. It’s so rewarding being able to come back to a place that means so much to me and continue teaching youth the importance of letting go and having fun.”

Today’s internship highlight comes courtesy of Avery and one of our favorite local organizations! Avery writes: “I am interning for Shifting Gears in Bellingham! Shifting Gears is a nonprofit that focuses on empowering women and non-binary folks through recreation to remove barriers and foster belonging. Some highlights throughout the summer include leading a backpacking trip with my roommate, weekly wild women paddles at the community boating center, and meeting so many amazing women!”

Last Thursday at the World Leisure Congress in Breda, the Netherlands, our very own Drew Murphy did an outstanding job presenting on the research he, Melissa, and Lindsay have been conducting on outcomes of the Outdoor Wellness Program. Way to represent RML and the OWP so wonderfully and meaningfully, Drew!

New week, new RML internship highlights to celebrate! Today we’re traveling to Oregon to hear all about the amazing work Paige has been doing this summer! Paige writes, “I’ve been having SO much fun as the therapeutic recreation intern for Adventures Without Limits in Oregon! AWL has been around for 30 years (we threw a birthday party this year, it’s legit), with the mission to remove barriers to outdoor recreation, whether that be ability, socioeconomic status, age, gender, race, and more. I’ve gotten the opportunity to facilitate adaptive programming in whitewater rafting, kayaking, hiking, and been on lots of overnight camping trips. I have the absolute best team of coworkers and mentors, and every day is something new!”

Today’s extraordinary internship highlight comes from Mallory, who traveled all the way across the country to play an integral role at Camp Chewonki in Wiscasset, Maine! Mallory writes: “I just finished my internship at Camp Chewonki! I was the operations assistant this summer so I got to plan and facilitate evening activities, theme days, and excursion days. One of my highlights was Medieval Day. Planning the day was so fun and I loved getting to see campers create costumes and get into the theme. Spending the summer at camp is always the best!”

Who’s ready to hear all about the amazing work our Phase III students have been doing this summer? Alex is starting off our internship highlights in a spectacular fashion. She writes, “I am working in Glacier National Park working on Lake McDonald, giving tours and sending out rentals! It’s been a blast to interact with so many people and explore the park. My highlight so far is I did my first solo summit mountaineering route and paddling down the river!”
