Congratulations to Rose Lab members, Sam Kobal and Aicha Tokar Falatah, on winning the Scholars Week Image Competition's Critic's Choice Award! The image you see here shows the C. elegans full 302 neuron connectome. This NeuroPAL strain enables unambiguous identification of individual neurons through unique color codes, allowing visualization of specific neuronal identities across the entire nervous system. It was captured using the Leica Stellaris 8 Laser Confocal Fluorescent Microscope. What an amazing image!

Congratulations to Jasmine Welaye, our outstanding graduate in the Experimental Psychology Graduate Program. Jasmine has been a prodigious scholar and advocate for social justice throughout her undergraduate and graduate years at WWU. Jasmine’s research has primarily focused on the neuroscience of stereotyping, prejudice, and social categorization. Most recently, their master’s thesis used event-related brain potentials (ERPs) and tests of recognition to assess whether goals to regulate biased behavior affect implicit perceptual biases between Black and White faces within the earliest phases of face processing. Jasmine has presented her research numerous times over the last several years at various conferences, including the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, Western Psychological Association, and Psychfest. Jasmine is also recognized for their advocacy in WWU’s community. She is an associate of the Center for Cross-Cultural Research, a leader in the Arab Student Association, and currently sits on WWU’s Board of Trustees Advisory Committee for Socially Responsible Investing. Way to go, Jasmine!

Congratulations to Alex Park, our Outstanding Graduate in Psychology for 2024-25! Alex is very active in the Center for Cross-Cultural Research, presenting research ideas to the group and deeply engaging in learning opportunities. Alex has been on Anna Ciao's research team for three years. He has trained to lead two evidence-based body image programs, led body image classes at Shuksan for two years, and helped to train and supervise other student leaders. Alex has been active on other research teams (e.g., Kate McLean, Kevin Delucio) and volunteered as a peer advisor within the Psychology Department. Alex embodies our departmental values: intellectually curious, excited to learn, and eager to offer a thoughtful and critical perspective. Way to go, Alex!
