Fisheries Technician III, applications close April 10th

Under the supervision of senior Fisheries Management Biologists, the Fisheries Technician III will play a supporting role in several field sampling and data collection projects that contribute to the management of fish and shellfish for the Lummi Nation. The Fisheries Technician will carry out biological sampling of salmon and halibut harvested during commercial, subsistence, ceremonial, and assessment fisheries, and participate in monitoring and assessing shellfish populations. The Fisheries Technician will provide technical and administrative support to regular fisheries management activities including data entry, outreach to the Lummi fishing community, and assisting with community distributions. This position may require irregular working hours (evenings or weekends) to fulfill sampling duties. The position is grant funded and will end 11/30/2026; extension is possible with procurement of additional funding. This position is eligible for health and retirement benefits. 20-40 hours per week.

Are you looking to pursue a career in environmental science or education? This volunteer position is a great option for students looking to gain restoration and outreach experience in the field, build communication skills, connect with environmental professionals, and engage our community in salmon recovery. A stipend of $800 is offered at the end of the term.

Stream Stewards Interns will support our Stewardship Team in facilitating weekly community work parties, including leading and educating volunteers in outdoor salmon ecology and habitat restoration activities (e.g. planting native trees and shrubs and removing invasive plants).

Today we honor the anniversary of the Boldt Decision — a landmark ruling that reaffirmed what our ancestors already knew and what our treaties guaranteed.

In 1974, Judge George Boldt upheld the promises made in the 1855 Point Elliott Treaty, affirming that Washington State tribes are entitled to half of the harvestable fish and recognizing our authority as co-managers of the resource. This decision was not a gift. It was a legal affirmation of treaty-reserved rights and tribal sovereignty.

For the Nooksack Indian Tribe, fishing is not simply a resource — it is identity, culture, responsibility, and connection. Since time immemorial, our people have relied on salmon and the waters of our homelands to sustain our families, our traditions, and our way of life.

The Boldt Decision strengthened tribal sovereignty and affirmed our role in stewardship. It also reminded the State and the nation that treaties are the supreme law of the land — promises made and promises that must be kept.

Today, we reflect on the leadership, resilience, and advocacy of the tribal leaders who fought for this recognition. And we recommit ourselves to protecting our treaty rights, our waters, and the salmon for the next seven generations.

The work continues. The responsibility continues. The sovereignty endures.
