The Office of the President is proud to announce that Northwest Indian College has acquired a Legoe Bay property on Lummi Island to serve as an educational center supporting teaching, learning, research and community gatherings.

The acquisition of this property marks a historic, full-circle moment for NWIC, reconnecting the College to the place where its story began more than 50 years ago. Located adjacent to the original site of the Lummi Indian School of Aquaculture (LISA), the property represents a renewed commitment to place, history and future generations.

"The acquisition of this property in Legoe Bay, Lummi Island, is one way for Northwest Indian College to honor our past. Our past leaders dared to dream of economic prosperity at a time when many of our people didn't have hope for the future. That dream resulted in the Lummi Aquaculture project and Lummi Indian School of Aquaculture. This history has lessons about Self-Determination, Tribal Leadership, Tribal Economic Development, Strategic Planning/Thinking, Culturally Rooted Programming, and many more. These lessons will all continue to be taught at Northwest Indian College, in the place where these lessons happened, for generations to come," NWIC President Dr. Lexie Tom said.

🛶 It's been one week since the NWIC Canoe Family left the Lummi Stommish grounds for this year's Paddle to Nisqually!

Since that time, they've landed and made stops in Samish, Swinomish, Tulalip, Suquamish, Muckleshoot and Puyallup. Thank you to all of the Nations for your generosity, warmth, support and community at each landing. Our hands go up to you.

NWIC's land crew made it to Nisqually yesterday, where they set up camp in preparation for today's final landing and protocol.

Our pullers left Puyallup earlier this morning, headed for final landing in Nisqually! The NWIC Canoe Family is anticipated to arrive sometime between 4 - 6 p.m. today.

📣 The Office of the President is pleased to announce that Justin Aceveda has transitioned to the role of Registrar, effective Monday, July 27, 2026.

Justin previously served as Northwest Indian College's First Year Experience Advisor for nearly three years, where he was an enthusiastic advisor and music tech coach based in Bellingham, WA. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Native Studies Leadership ('24) from NWIC, and is currently pursuing his Master's in Adult and Higher Education from Western Washington University.

Committed to our students, Justin strives to be a positive role model and create a safe, encouraging environment at NWIC and in his home community of Juneau, AK.

"I am excited to transition to this new role as Registrar for NWIC and continue to steward the support needed for our students," Justin said.

Outside of work, Justin enjoys reading, sound and art design, bushcraft, basketball and exploring new ideas and creative projects. He has a background in audio engineering, specializing in electronic music production.

"We're excited to welcome Justin into his new role as Registrar. This position is a great fit based on his previous experience as both an NWIC alum and academic advisor," Victoria Retasket, Northwest Indian College Dean of Students & Enrollment Management, said. "As we continue to increase our focus on clear and understandable information, increased communication, and overall student success, Justin is a welcome addition in this new role, and we look forward to his contributions."

🛶 The NWIC Canoe Family is on their way and have begun their 2026 Canoe Journey: Paddle to Nisqually!

After packing up camp as the sun rose, the NWIC Canoe Family paddled out from Stommish early Friday morning. They will land at Samish (Fidalgo Bay) later this afternoon, where their land crew will set up camp.

We wish them and all Canoe Families on Journey safe travels and good memories.
