WWU Counseling Center

WWU Counseling Center The Counseling Center helps currently enrolled WWU students address and overcome personal and academic issues. Spam will be removed.

We offer group counseling, short-term individual or couples’ counseling, and psycho-educational workshops and classes to help students address their concerns and gain the skills to be successful at WWU. We also assist students by referring them to other services on campus and to community resources that can offer more specialized or longer-term help with problems and concerns. Guidelines for Parti

cipation:

Western Washington University supports and promotes the free exchange of ideas, including those that might be challenging to hear. However, when conversations get past the point of respectful, intelligent conversation, we may step in and attempt to redirect the conversation or even hide or delete posts. Sometimes things get rowdier than we might like online, but our guidelines for handling these situations do include de-escalation, and we'll attempt to take those routes when circumstances permit. That said, there are some cases that warrant immediate removal. We reserve the right to remove without warning any posts that violate the below guidelines.

When posting, please follow these general guidelines:

• Be humane: Behind the computer screen, there are real humans with real feelings; avoid insulting language or belittling statements.
• Be reasonable: Understand that this page is not just another Internet venue; it is representative of Western Washington University. Posts that inflame others' sensibilities will be removed, and those who use the forum as trolling grounds will not be tolerated.
• Be open: Play with new ideas; try believing before doubting others’ perspectives; listen and ask questions before offering judgments.
• Be ethical: Respect privacy; avoid deception, libel, or falsities; post only non-copyrighted material.
• Be credible: Impress yourself and others by presenting your insights with care.
• Be forgiving: We all make mistakes; if something offends you, express a genuine response while giving others the benefit of the doubt.
• Be safe: Since this page is public, avoid posting personal information; use private messaging instead. More on post content:

• Spam: A spam post contributes nothing to the discussion or topic of a thread. Examples include links without descriptions, off-topic or dismissive image posts without descriptions, or interrupting the dialogue of others. If you make a habit of spamming, you’re likely to receive a ban from the page.
• Personal attacks: Direct insults directed towards other users will not be tolerated. If someone is wrong on the Internet, you can address it without attacking the person. We’ll remove personal attacks, insulting language or belittling statements at our discretion.
• Offensive language: Racial or other identity-based slurs employed in derogatory ways will be removed. While it may be fine to talk about the use of this sort of language, it’s not OK to use it with malice.
• Inappropriate Content: Content posted directly to this page is expected to be “safe for work.” You may post links to or discuss more risqué content, but please use discretion and describe or label risqué links as “not safe for work” or “NSFW.” This isn’t an “anything goes” space. If you post inappropriate content directly to this page or fail to describe a link, the content will be removed.

Mental Health Promotion Tip #34: Practice Mindfulness. Take a moment to notice each of your senses each day. Simply ‘be’ in the moment – feel the sun and wind on your face and notice the air you are breathing. Drink plenty of water! It’s easy to be caught up thinking about the past or planning for the future instead of experiencing the present. Practicing mindfulness, by focusing your attention on being in the moment, is a good way to do this. Making a conscious effort to be aware of your inner and outer world is important for your mental health.

Good luck with finals week Vikings! Don't forget to practice self care in between all of the studying.

Mental Health Promotion Tip #33: Get plenty of sleep. Go to bed at a regular time each day and practice good habits to get better sleep. Sleep restores both your mind and body. However, feelings of fatigue can still set in if you feel constantly rushed and overwhelmed when you are awake. Allow yourself some unfocussed time each day to refresh; for example, let your mind wander, daydream or simply watch the clouds go by for a while. It’s OK to add 'do nothing’ to your to-do list!
