Dear friends, As most of you know, music does not, nor has it ever, functioned in isolation from the other performing arts (especially theatre and dance). Consequently, at Beloit College, we have put our money where our pedagogical/institutional mouths are (so to speak). Starting in the fall of 2024, the music department is no more. HOWEVER, starting this fall, we are proud to announce the new Beloit College Department of Performing and Applied Arts, a merging of music, theatre, and dance. We hope you'll follow our new FB page (we'll be retiring this page presently) in order for us to keep up with you and for you to keep up with all the exciting things on the horizon.

In 2014 we introduced a new course, "Music, Sound, and Theory." It was a radical, groundbreaking class that replaced the traditional fundamentals and introduction to music theory course and, instead, focused on elements of music and sound, put in conversation with scholarly/critical discussions from multiple disciplines, pushing our students to think differently about what music and music theory was, how it meant different things to different people, and how they could apply it to their own interests. The course evolved over eight years, taught and developed by Daniel Barolsky, Tes Slominski, Darci Sprengel, and Yvonne Wu. Yvonne and Daniel presented a poster on this course last weekend at the Music Theory Pedagogy Into Practice Conference at Michigan State. We learned an immense amount from our colleagues across the country but were also delighted by the enthusiastic response by these same colleagues, many of who envied the opportunity we were given by Beloit College to experiment and grow a course like this.

The Music Department at Beloit is slowly gearing up for in-person learning this fall. But this doesn't mean we'll have forgotten the last year. In the spring semester, students in Daniel Barolsky's course on Music and Psychology spent a unit exploring the effects of the pandemic on music and, inversely, the ways musical engagement changed during the pandemic. Although the class is over, the research on this topic is continuing to develop. A conference on this very topic will be held online on July 28. Some of you might find it of interest:
