Bennington College

Bennington College Bold liberal arts since 1932. The only U.S. college with a guaranteed annual internship program for real-world career prep.

Bennington College holds a distinguished place among American colleges and universities. It was the first to include the visual and performing arts in a liberal arts education. Bennington is the only college in the country to require an annual internship, Field Work Term, since its founding. For two months every winter students work with an organization or institution of their choosing, anywhere i

n the world, to apply what they have learned on campus and to bring focus to what they study at Bennington. Rooted in an abiding faith in the talent, imagination, and responsibility of the individual, Bennington invites students to pursue and shape their own intellectual inquiries, and in doing so to discover the profound interconnection of things. Bennington liberates and nurtures the individuality and rigorous creativity of its students, supporting them as they forge their own paths and work toward a world more beautiful, sustainable, democratic, and just. Located in the picturesque southwestern corner of Vermont, Bennington borders New York's capital district and the culture-rich Berkshire region of western Massachusetts. The College is a short drive to its southern neighbors Williams College, The Clark Art Museum, and MASS MoCA and to the shopping, outdoor adventure, and literary offerings just to its north in Manchester, Vermont.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our summer programs last week. We had an incredible time learning and exploring with you all. Plus, seeing a few familiar faces back on campus certainly made us smile.

Additionally, thank you to all the staff, faculty, and alumni who made this year’s summer programs possible. We all appreciate your hard work and dedication to sharing “the magic” of Bennington College and its academic programs.

Earlier this month Phoenix Malanga ‘22 presented his newest work at MAC Steel as a part of a two-week sculpture residency in Rutland, Vermont. His larger-than-life metal sculpture was comprised of found objects, steel, and other metal materials collaged together in the spirit of his father’s hobby: buying small plots of land and building collaged cabins. The piece is titled “син на татко” meaning “father’s son” in Macedonian.

Malanga’s work represents the artistic values of Bennington College, opening the door to thoughtful conversations about identity, communication, and human relationships.

If you or someone you know is a young and talented visual artist dedicated to these same values, please apply to the Bennington Young Creator Awards. Submissions open September 1st. More information is available on our website.

With classes starting next week, we want to highlight one of our favorites from this past term: the Maple Sugaring Tutorial! Alex Libby ‘27 has coordinated this tutorial for the past two spring terms. Mixing academics and field work, the tutorial is hosted by faculty member in Ecology, Caitlin McDonough MacKenzie, who teaches the science behind sap collection and recent environmental impacts on the sugaring process. After this practical foundation, students spend the rest of the term collecting sap and then processing it into maple syrup.

When speaking to Libby, he describes the “sugar shack” as a “community space” with students passing through at all hours of the day and night to process the sugar. The students gather in the small yellow building behind Jennings to create a stronger community inside of Bennington College. Libby hopes to expand the tutorial to more students this spring.
