Congratulations to our student Filza Mutaal for her remarkable achievement at the MIT Undergraduate Research Technology Conference (URTC). Her research presentation, "Deaths of Despair in Virginia: Analyzing Socioeconomic Factors and Demographics," won first place in the conference among 150+ participants.

Filza is a junior at Berea College, majoring in Economics with a double concentration in Finance and International Politics and Policy and minoring in Business Administration. Read as Filza shares her experience at the MIT conference:

"I was honored to win First Place at the MIT Undergraduate Research Technology Conference (URTC) for my research titled "Deaths of Despair in Virginia: Analyzing Socioeconomic Factors and Demographics." This research focused on understanding how socioeconomic conditions like median household income, poverty rate, and educational attainment affect deaths of despair—drug overdoses, alcohol-related deaths, and suicides—particularly in Appalachian communities and underrepresented demographics. The study used statistical modeling and geographic data visualization tools to analyze trends and correlations.

The conference, held at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, MA) on OCT 11-13, 2024, showcased cutting-edge undergraduate research in technology, science, and policy. It was an incredible opportunity to present my work alongside peers from institutions across the globe and to engage with experts in my field. Winning First Place among such an impressive 150+ pool of participants was truly humbling and validating."

On September 26, 2024, Dr. Michael Cary from Virgina Tech and three Berea College students (Filza Mutaal, Jessica Douthit and Nicholas Hamilton) presented on their summer research that they conducted during their 10 week stay in the Virginia Tech Data Science for the Public Good Program (DSPG).

Deaths of Despair in Virginia: Analyzing Socioeconomic Factors and Demographics (Filza)

Estimating the effects of utility-scale solar facilities on housing prices: A study in Prince George County, VA (Jessica)

Projecting Food Insecurity in Southwest Virginia respectively (Nicholas)

Dr. Michael Cary, the new director of the DSPG, also presented the program answered students’ questions about this research opportunity and about potential graduate studies at Virginia Tech.

On March 19, the Economics and Business Department's students and faculty had the opportunity to gather for the 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗟𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗼𝗻. They got to hear 𝗞𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗮 𝗟𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗹𝗲𝘆's (Associate Professor of Commerce at UVA McIntire School of Commerce) wonderful presentation about building a successful life .
