We were glad to see Fr. Chris Renz, O.P., Professor of Liturgical Studies and Director of the Blackfriars Gallery & Library, speak at SF Art Forum on the Tree of Life in art and architecture. It was an evening full of insight into the theological language of sacred art from Genesis to the Cross.

DSPT needs your help!

We’ve been gifted an incredible collection of 50,000+ books to grow our theology library—but we need your help to make it possible.

We must raise $50,000 by the end of the month to create a temporary space to house them.

Every gift moves us closer to preserving these works and putting them into the hands of students and scholars

Our most recent St. Albert's Seminar at DSPT hosted Dr. Venessa de Harven, from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Her research focused on the Stoics who famously were corporealists, who said that only bodies exist and that the soul, its virtues, and all our attributes are bodies too. Dr. Venessa, and the discussion that followed, aimed to answer if a corporealist accounts for personal identity.

The conversation naturally moved to the Stoic concept of "eternal reoccurrence", where one's body in this universe is numerically identical to the infinitely many body's that are born, live, and die just the same way in the "infinitely many next and previous worlds". A mind-bending and thought-provoking talk and discussion, engaging the wider philosophical community here at DSPT!

This past Tuesday, the Dominican School of Philosophy & Theology hosted its annual Aquinas Lecture with Richard C. Taylor, Professor of Philosophy at Marquette University. Dr. Taylor is a well- established and celebrated scholar, with specialties in Islamic Philosophy and Avicennian metaphysics.

Taylor presented his research on Avicenna, one of the most important eastern Islamic philosophers of the Middle Ages. In doing so, he compared Avicenna's metaphysics with Aquinas', explaining the similarities and differences between the two schools of thought. Followed was an engaging discussion. A beautiful and stimulating evening of philosophy and questioning!
