New College Berkeley, a long-standing center for Christian studies, bears the motto: “Let Us Walk in Newness of Life.” Since its founding in 1977, New College Berkeley has served undergraduates, graduate students, and life-time learners with wide-ranging courses, conferences, seminars, lectures, and retreats aimed at renewing minds, deepening faith, and shaping vocation. We do so at in-person gath

erings and, especially in a season of public health concerns, we also do so through on-line gatherings. Expanding a mission focused on the relevance of biblical faith for all Christians, in 1992 NCB became an affiliate of the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, an interfaith consortium of nine seminaries and eleven affiliates associated with the University of California at Berkeley. NCB contributes academic courses, spiritual formation programs, and public forums to this distinguished theological consortium and university community. At NCB we encourage an integration of faith with academic disciplines and the cultivation of Christian vocation within secular studies and professional engagement. Committed to the “priesthood of all believers,” we find our programs and community life enriched by the participation of university students, seminarians, and Christians from Bay Area churches. In response to the spiritual depletion many Christians experience in our time-pressed, work- driven culture, New College Berkeley has expanded its spiritual formation programs since 2000. We now offer spiritual direction and regular retreat opportunities, along with programs integrating Christian faith with fields such as literature, psychology, social justice issues, science, and biblical studies. We are blessed to be part of the exceptional intellectual culture of Berkeley, fortifying the faith and vocations of students who will be influencing the church and the world. Contact:

Has war and fascism been on your mind lately? It certainly was for C.S. Lewis and J.R.R Tolkien when they served on the Western Front in WWI. 1917 deeply impacted their lives, faith, theology. To glean from their wisdom, New College Berkeley is hosting a conference on March 21-22, co-sponsored with Northwind Institute and First Presbyterian Church Berkeley. While at Cal, I had the privilege of assisting Grace Dyrness with San Francisco ‘83, a national urban conference led by the late Pete Hammond. Her husband Bill was president of New College Berkeley and I still refer to his Themes in Old Testament Theology to this day. Was a joy for Tina and me to finally reconnect with them this past weekend. Their passion for Christ and His purposes continues to inspire me.

Dr. Ruth Padilla DeBorst is in Oakland (from Costa Rica) this Thursday, so come join us! Ruth will help us with the question: “How does the Church embody the Good News in such a time as this.” Having just returned from the Lausanne gathering in Seoul, Ruth is freshly aware of the challenge this question presents today. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to meet with this important leader from the global south. Go to www.bit.ly/padilladeborst to register.

“Teologia en Conjunto” (theology in community) was what Robert Chao Romero powerfully led us through today in Berkeley. The beginnings of partnership between New College Berkeley and the Latino-led Ministries of the PSWC-ECC was significant. Thank you Pastor Barry Wong and Berkeley Covenant for hosting us! Next up: Ruth Padilla DeBorst this Thursday night in Oakland: www.bit.ly/padilladeborst
