Read the latest publication to the CLACS Blog!

In July 2025, four members of the Coletivo de Tradutores Berkeley-Brasil (Berkeley Brazil Translators Collective) — Derek Allen, Ana Claudia Lopes, Liam Seeley, and Luíza Bastos Lages — traveled to Brazil. They went to experience first-hand some of the realities that they worked on translating as part of Revista Pihhy, a project presenting Indigenous knowledge by Indigenous authors in English

Abelardo de la Cruz (UNC-Chapel Hill) discusses Nahua religion in the region of Chicontepec (northern Veracruz, Mexico), also known as the Huasteca Veracruzana. In this region, there is a select group of people known as motiochihuanih (prayer specialists), whose main labor is to pray Christian prayers and to carry out several rituals associated with the local religion called el costumbre (the custom).

This event was part of the Mesoamerica: Disrupting Narratives, Past and Present event series, supported by CLACS. Co-sponsored by the Mexican Studies Working Group.

Join us for the "Digital Ecologies Spring 2026 Student Showcase."

The Digital Ecologies Working Group, led by Deibi Sibrian (Ph.D. student in ESPM), brings together graduate students, undergraduates, and faculty to examine the socio-environmental impacts of digital transformations across Latin America, with a current focus on El Salvador. This student-led showcase presents interdisciplinary research on cryptocurrency-driven urbanization, the reversal of El Salvador’s national mining ban, and the rise of AI infrastructure.

Using methods such as remote sensing with Google Earth Engine, sentiment analysis, and visual ethnography, apprentices and graduate collaborators share findings on how digital industries are reshaping ecosystems, land governance, and community health. The showcase will highlight innovative student research and invite discussion on pathways toward environmental justice and regenerative digital futures.

Presented by the Digital Ecologies Working Group, supported by CLACS.

Join us for, "Sanctions Against Cuba and the Current Crisis."

This hybrid in-person/virtual panel discussion is an opportunity to learn about the devastating impact of U.S. imposed sanctions against Cuba and the escalating crisis in the country. The speakers will focus on the many ways that sanctions affect daily life for Cubans and will provide an on the ground report back on the current situation. This conversation is especially important right now as the energy and humanitarian crisis intensifies amid the fuel blockade and the U.S. government’s recent threats of regime change on the island. The panel discussion will be followed by a Q&A session from the audience. The event is in English and is free and open to the public

In October 2002, the U.S. wanted the U.N. Security Council to sanction its invasion of Iraq. Adolfo Aguilar Zinser, who was then Mexico's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and sat on the Security Council, helped lead resistance to that demand. He spoke for CLACS on November 18, 2002.

Join us for, "Mexico's Democracy at Risk: Luis Ugalde in Conversation with Eduardo Garcia."

Mexico's democracy is experiencing profound changes following a constitutional amendment affecting the independence of the country's judicial branch. Concerns are rising about its autonomous institutions, including the electoral system, falling into the government's hands. Join IIS in examining these changes and the dangers facing Mexico's democracy and economic development.

Eduardo García (Visiting Professor, UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism) has spent more than three decades combining an economics background with a multifaceted journalism career to help local and international audiences make sense of Mexico's business, economic, social, and political landscapes. García served as chief of Bloomberg’s Mexico City bureau and founded the country's first digital financial publication, Sentido Común, today known as Axis Negocios. Luis Ugalde, director of Integralia Consultores, will lead the conversation.

This event is presented by the Berkeley Institute of International Studies. Co-sponsored by CLACS and the Graduate School of Journalism.
